Premier League betting tips: Arsenal begin their title defence, Newcastle’s new manager with a rebuild and more Gameweek 1 betting tips

Oyy Oyy. Football is so back.

Announce:

  •  £47 accumulator absolutely flying, only to be undone by a 95th-minute goal to bust the lot (VAR then checking if my mental health is still intact)

  • “Last one” at 6:30pm turns into a 3am kebab job

  • Arguing with a bloke called Jez about xG at 2:47am in the kebab shop

  • Waking up with 14 missed calls and £6.23 in my bank account.

Read on for a breakdown of the best bets from the opening weekend’s Premier League TV games from Sports News Blitz’s punting laureate - The Bookie Basher - including the massive clash between Newcastle and Liverpool on Sunday, August 23.

Arsenal vs Coventry City

The Gunners are Premier League champions and all the rage to retain their crown after dismantling Manchester City in the Charity Shield.

The underlying numbers showed how Mikel Arteta’s men dominated on Sunday, August 16.

Arsenal created 2.19 expected goals (xG) compared to City's 0.77. Tellingly for Arsenal - none of their xG came from set-pieces - when a ton of their goals came from set-pieces last season.

Looks a steering job this for the champions. Coventry are odds-on to be relegated and Arsenal 5/4 favourites to win the league.

Frank Lampard’s side arrive as Championship champions after scoring 97 goals last term and have added quality, including record signing Caleb Yirenkyi.

In the 2023/24 and 2024/25 Premier League seasons, all six promoted sides were relegated.

Sunderland and Leeds United bucked that trend last season, so there his hope for the Sky Blues, but this looks a tough assignment.

I fancy Arsenal to win back-to-back titles, a feat they have not achieved since they won three in a row in the 1930s, and 6/4 that they win this by more than two goals looks solid.

However, a bet that catches the eye at a slightly higher price is Christos Tzolis to lay on at least one assist.

The low-key summer signing played a starring role at Wembley last week with two assists and linked up well with Riccardo Calafiori to cause City any amount of problems.

Suggested bet: Christos Tzolis over 0.5 assists at 2/1 (bet365)

Hull City vs Manchester United

Pretty sure this is finally the season I receive a knighthood for services to heavy punting.

Listen, if Robert Mugabe received an honorary British knighthood in 1994, I must have half a chance.

Talking of chances, if you fancy Hull City to do a Leicester, they are available at a slack 3500/1 to win the title.

The lack of sales has so far affected United's moves in the transfer market, but new signing Andrey Santos impressed across Manchester United's pre-season campaign.

As for Hull this season, there will be moments of courage, flashes of quality and perhaps the occasional afternoon when hope briefly puts its coat on and steps outside.

However, they are destined for a swift return to the Championship, and a 4-1 ending at Old Trafford would not surprise me.

Suggested bet: Manchester United to win 4-1 at 22/1 (bet365)

Brentford vs Tottenham

Spurs arrive under Roberto De Zerbi with the scars of two seasons spent flirting dangerously with the wrong end of the table, but also with a new boss determined to restore something resembling a pulse.

They have made some astute summer signings and look too big at 7/4 to win in West London.

Indeed, 7/4 is a right price. Put your shirt on it, your pants on it. And when you win - roast beef, two veg, Yorkshire pudding and God save the King.

Suggested bet: Tottenham to win at 7/4 (General)

Newcastle United vs Liverpool

Newcastle United have the richest owners in world football, backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

So, can someone please explain to me why they have sold all their best players and seemingly assembled a squad of absolute shi*munchers?

The Toon begin a new era under Matthias Jaissle after a summer in which Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali have departed, leaving their new coach with the unenviable task of rebuilding the engine while the car is already moving.

Alexander Isak returning should supply enough emotional electricity to illuminate Tyneside, but when the dust settles, Liverpool will be victorious here.

I’ve been busting to lump Andoni Iraola’s men ever since the fixtures were announced, and I spied them at odds against for this (that price has been nibbled at and they are now a shade of odds on), and while I can see Newcastle scoring, I can’t see the Reds leaving without all three points.

Suggested bet: Liverpool to win & btts at 21/10 (bet3656 / Coral / Hills / Ladbrokes)
