Premier League: Chelsea vs Fulham betting preview and prediction
Monday night's Premier League action kicks off with a high-stakes West London derby as Chelsea travel to Craven Cottage to face Fulham, writes Sports News Blitz’s Joseph Kan’gethe.
All eyes are on whether the Blues’ head coach Xabi Alonso can quickly establish the control and structure he wants from his team.
Chelsea have not lost an opening-day Premier League fixture since August 11 2019, when Manchester United handed them a 4-0 defeat at Old Trafford.
On Monday, August 24, Fulham will, however, provide a difficult first test under new manager Alvaro Arbeloa, with their tactical organisation capable of disrupting Chelsea and capitalising on any weaknesses in Alonso's new system.
Rather than assuming this as an easy win for a Big Six club, this preview examines how the two teams’ strengths and weaknesses could influence the result and where the strongest betting angles lie across the winner, correct score, first goalscorer and last goalscorer markets.
Chelsea vs Fulham score prediction and tactics
Chelsea clearly have the higher tactical ceiling under Alonso, but this opening fixture will test how quickly the Spaniard can turn his ideas into a cohesive side.
The Blues showed encouraging signs in their final pre-season game against Real Sociedad, featuring a flexible attacking combination that looked to overload the half-spaces and benefit from Joao Pedro's intelligent link-up play.
The Cottagers are unlikely to simply park the bus under Arbeloa, with the hosts expected to press aggressively and compete for control in key areas of the pitch.
Arbeloa’s teams often look to use a 4-3-3 that can shift into a 4-2-3-1, with wide players moving inside and the full-backs providing width.
Fulham will look to use counter-pressing triggers, aiming to suffocate Chelsea's deep build-up before the Blues can reorganise behind the ball.
That could not only make the early stages of the game competitive, but it'll also create spaces Chelsea would attack.
Should Alonso's side successfully bypass Fulham's first wave of pressure, their rotations in the final third can disrupt Fulham's defensive structure.
Chelsea's biggest risk is defending counter-attacks, especially if Fulham win the ball while their forwards are already positioned to attack the space behind Chelsea's defence.
I therefore expect a competitive game in which Chelsea's greater attacking threat will make the difference.
However, their defence is shaky, which makes a clean sheet unlikely, with a 3-1 Chelsea victory my predicted correct score.
Where Alonso could give Chelsea the tactical edge vs Fulham
Alonso's tactical setup is designed to create numerical advantage, and his system provides the Blues with the tools needed to break Fulham's organisation.
Operating in a 3-2-4-1 formation, Chelsea will use a three-man backline to build play from the back, baiting Fulham's front line to press and leave space behind them.
Chelsea will look to maximise the width of the pitch by keeping their wing-backs wide, which will force Fulham's defence to choose between defending the width and protecting the box.
In the centre, Moises Caicedo will operate as one half of the double pivot that will establish midfield control, helping Chelsea control the midfield and dictate the tempo.
Chelsea will become particularly dangerous through the intelligent link-up among their attacking trio.
Rather than staying high alongside the opposition centre-backs, Joao Pedro can drop into deeper areas to receive the ball, drawing a defender out of position and opening space for Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer to attack the gaps around Fulham's centre-backs.
As Fulham's defenders move inside to deal with Joao Pedro, Rogers and Palmer, Chelsea can use their wing-backs to stretch the defence and attack the space out wide.
That flexibility could be Chelsea's biggest advantage at Craven Cottage.

Why Fulham could make Chelsea work for the points
Chelsea enter the derby as favourites, but Fulham will have a clear tactical plan for disrupting the visitors’ build-up and attacking the spaces they leave behind.
Craven Cottage remains a difficult assignment on the opening day, particularly with Arbeloa beginning his first Premier League game in charge in front of his new supporters.
Fulham could allow Chelsea to control possession in deeper areas before pressing at the right moment and attacking the spaces left behind the visitors’ advanced wing-backs.
That threat could expose Chelsea's biggest defensive concern under Alonso: the space left behind their wing-backs when they push high up the pitch.
Chelsea's defence still looks vulnerable, with the 11 goals conceded during pre-season highlighting the spaces Fulham could look to exploit.
Fulham could hurt the Blues by winning the ball quickly in midfield and releasing fast players such as Alex Iwobi into the spaces Chelsea leave behind when they commit players forward.
While Chelsea boast the superior individual quality, their defensive concerns mean that any points secured along the Thames will have to be earned.

First goalscorer prediction
Joao Pedro looks like the strongest goalscorer candidate after finishing last season as Chelsea's top scorer with 15 Premier League goals before carrying that form into pre-season.
The Brazilian has already scored a brace against Real Sociedad as part of his seven goals across five friendlies.
His goal threat is not based entirely on recent form, with Joao Pedro averaging 2.46 shots per 90 minutes in the Premier League last season.
He has also scored twice against Fulham in his previous five league appearances, including Chelsea's 2-0 win over the Cottagers last August.
Joao Pedro's first-goal potential is backed by his role, with the striker able to link up play before making runs into the penalty area to finish chances created from wide areas.
With Palmer and Rogers operating behind him, Joao Pedro will receive chances around the penalty area while also benefiting from the creativity of the two attacking midfielders.
Alex Iwobi: The likely last goalscorer
Iwobi becomes a more appealing late-game pick because of the likely game state, as Chelsea pushing higher could leave the spaces behind their defence that he can exploit on the counter.
If Chelsea are leading late in the game, Fulham will have little choice but to push more players forward, which could leave space behind Chelsea's advancing wing-backs when Fulham win the ball.
Iwobi is well suited to capitalising on these moments, especially when he receives the ball with space to carry it towards the final third.
Arbeloa's late attacking changes could add fresh legs to Fulham's attack, creating more opportunities for Iwobi to find space against a tiring Chelsea defence.
While Fulham’s aggressive press at Craven Cottage will test Chelsea’s defensive stability and likely lead to an exchange of goals, Chelsea’s superior attacking creativity and individual quality under Alonso will be decisive.
A 3-1 victory for the Blues stands as the strongest outcome, making Chelsea to win and Both Teams to Score the most appealing betting angle for this West London derby.
Score prediction: Chelsea to beat Fulham 3-1
Betting tips: Both teams to score, and Joao Pedro & Alex Iwobi to score
