Indian Wells Open 2026: Reviewing the main talking points so far

So far the Indian Wells Tennis Garden has produced some fantastic match-ups and surprise finishes.

From Jannik Sinner and Joao Fonseca’s thrilling tennis to Mirra Andreeva’s early exit,  players are pushing their game to ruffle the draw in the Coachella Valley.

Taking a look at what’s gone on throughout the rounds at Tennis Paradise and what the main talking points are is Sports News Blitz’s Lorenzo Gagliotta.

Surprise twists to the Open

The Californian desert has been unforgiving for some of the top players on both sides of the draw.

On the women’s tour, rising stars from the Australian Open - Zeynep Sönmez and Iva Jovic faced early exits, Sönmez losing out to Anna Kalinskaya and Jovic, defeated by Colombian Camila Osorio.

Osorio faced her ultimate test in the Round of 32, against the 2018 Indian Wells Open winner Naomi Osaka, who dominated in a three-set battle on Court 2.

The biggest surprise came when Olympic champion Kateřina Siniaková defeated the defending champion Mirra Andreeva in dramatic fashion.

Siniaková took the game to three sets in an incredibly close match with Andreeva, who just lost her stroke in the final set, losing out and causing antics with the Californian crowd.

Sabalenka surging

World number one Aryna Sabalenka strode through to the semi-finals, following an exciting encounter with the talented Canadian Victoria Mboko, as Sabalenka looks to get her 2026 season back on track.

On the men’s tour, the Canadian contingent looked very promising, with Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime playing their highest level of tennis.

The pair both met their match, with Shapovalov losing out to world number two Jannik Sinner in straight sets and Auger-Alissiame defeated by Doha finalist Arthur Fils.

The British pair of Jack Draper and Cameron Norrie continue their excellent run of form, with Draper defeating five-time Indian Wells champion Novak Djokovic in a thrilling match and Norrie facing the ultimate test against world number one Carlos Alcaraz.

Fans across the globe have been in full voice at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, none more than the Brazilian fans supporting their teenage talent Joao Fonseca.

Tipped to be a future Grand Slam winner, Fonseca won over the crowd in every encounter, with his ferocious yet exhilarating playing style.

It was a first-ever battle with Italian Jannik Sinner which had produced one of the matches of the year so far, with a double tiebreak to decide the match, with Sinner ultimately pulling through.

Alcaraz is aiming to continue his unbeaten run

With both defending champions out of the tournament, the stage is set for the rest of players to take the next step up.

Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz couldn’t start his campaign any better, winning the Australian Open, achieving a career Slam and subsequently winning the Doha Open.

He heads into an interesting battle with Daniil Medvedev, heading into their eighth encounter, with their last match being in the Indian Wells Open final back in 2024, to which Alcaraz won.

With back-to-back titles to his name in the Coachella valley, the world number one has faced a difficult draw, facing the likes of Grigor Dimitrov and Casper Ruud.

He has only dropped one set in matches played, losing out on a set to the hard-hitting Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech.

He looks to continue his unbeaten run with the goal to achieve a third title at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Looking ahead to the final rounds

Tennis Paradise in 2026 has been a tournament to remember, for both spectators and players.

As the final rounds get ever so closer, the draw for both the men and the women is set to produce some fantastic match-ups of tennis.

On the men’s side, it is all set for the semi-finals with the top two amongst the mix in a chance to win the Indian Wells Open.

World number two Jannik Sinner dispatched the young American talent Learner Tien in straight sets and is set to face world number four Alexander Zverev for a place in the final.

Alcaraz continued his immaculate form, managing to make light work of Brit Cameron Norrie in the quarter-finals to face Medvedev.

Medvedev, a dark horse heading into the tournament following his win in Dubai, managed to pull all the tricks out the bag to defeat defending champion Jack Draper.

Final rounds which drastically change the trajectory for each player looking to add silverware to their name.

On the women’s side, Elena Rybakina looks for her second BNP Paribas Open title as she’s set to face Elina Svitolina, who’s hit form at the right time with her remarkable brand of tennis, getting past world number two Iga Swiatek.

Sabalenka faces young Czech talent Linda Noskova, as she looks to equal her best career result, last reaching a final in Beijing, losing out to America’s Amanda Anismova.

The stars could align in the Californian desert for there to be a rematch of the first Grand Slam final between Sabalenka and Rybakina.
