Chelsea vs Newcastle: Memorable Magpies matches against Chelsea

After a late heartbreak midweek in the Champions League against Barcelona, Newcastle United must regroup for a tricky away day at Stamford Bridge as they take on Chelsea.

Both teams have faced each other 179 times, with the Blues having the advantage: 53 wins in 88 games, whilst Newcastle have only 12 victories.

Here, Sports News Blitz writer Mosaddek Abu takes a look at some of the most memorable games to come from this fixture.

Chelsea 3-4 Newcastle, Carling Cup Third round - September 22, 2010

Now known as the Carabao Cup, but in 2010 it was the Carling Cup.

Newcastle exited this competition at this stage the year prior, after losing 2-0 to Peterborough.  It was feared to be a familiar scenario after being drawn away to the then-Premier League Champions, Chelsea.

The Magpies stood their ground, leading the game 2-1 in the first half, after goals from Nile Ranger and Steven Taylor, but United inflicted further damage, as Shola Ameobi put them 3-1 up.

But the game wasn’t without its drama as Nicholas Anelka’s brace levelled the game, scoring a penalty in the 87th minute. Three minutes later, a corner came Newcastle’s way as Ameobi met the end of it with a glancing header in injury time, stunning the current league champions.

Newcastle ended up going out in the fourth round with a 4-0 defeat to Arsenal.

Still, the Geordies would never forget the night when one of their own garnered a famous victory against Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea.

Newcastle 3-2 Chelsea - February 2, 2013

A memorable home debut. But it didn’t come easy for the Magpies, who opened the scoring through Jonas Gutierrez.

Frank Lampard and Juan Mata edged the Blues in front. However, the Magpies didn’t roll over in front of the St James’ crowd.

A young Moussa Sissoko, at the age of 23, on his home debut, provided all the Geordies in attendance with an all-time moment, equalising at the 68th minute and then drilled a fierce low drive past Petr Cech for a 90th-minute winner, making for the perfect home debut.

Newcastle United 4-2 Chelsea - September 10, 1994

The mid-90s were a golden period for the Toon, and they were enjoying life under Kevin Keegan, winning their first four games of the season and in amongst the top four.

Glen Hoodle’s Chelsea had also made a positive start to their season and had just come off a 3-0 win over Manchester City.

The Magpies were in search of their fifth victory of the season, and Chelsea provided a challenge as Newcastle only had a 2-1 lead headed into half-time.

Paul Furlong edged one back for the Blues before the break. In the second half, Keegan’s side ramped up the pressure, with Rob Lee adding to the score sheet in the 55th minute, and Andy Cole doubled his goal tally.

They claimed their fifth win of the season and climbed to the top of the Premier League. The Magpies finished the season in fifth place, whilst the Blues finished 11th.

Newcastle United 4-1 Chelsea - November 25, 2023

An injury hit Magpies, who were battling on all fronts and had lost away to Bournemouth before this game, whilst Chelsea came into this game off the back of an eight-goal thriller with Manchester City.

Before he decided to ruin every existing relationship he had on Tyneside, Alexander Isak was scoring goals for fun as an honorary Geordie, finishing with a composed shot past Robert Sanchez.

He gave the Magpies the lead inside 13 minutes. Didn’t last long, thanks to a Raheem Sterling free kick, but Joelinton and Jamaal Lascelles made up for the concession, restoring a two-goal lead.

Still, the visitors were at fault for their own downfall here, and to make matters worse, the Blues were reduced to ten when Reece James received a second yellow for a foul on Anthony Gordon, who scored to kill the game off officially.

Both sides ended up finishing quite close to each other in the final table, with Chelsea finishing one place above Newcastle in sixth, whilst the Magpies finished seventh with three points separating both.

Newcastle 2-2 Chelsea - December 20,  2025

How about something more recent?

A week after their defeat in the first Premier League Tyne-Wear Derby since 2016, Newcastle didn’t have time to dwell on their derby-day performance, having had a Carabao Cup game in midweek against Fulham.

Controversy was also at the centre of this game. The Magpies were 2-0 up after 20 minutes thanks to a Nick Woltemade brace. But Reece James put the pressure back on Newcastle, with his free kick from 25 yards inside the first few minutes of the second half.

Things turned hostile after Trevor Chalobah bodychecked Anthony Gordon inside the penalty area, and soon after, a target Newcastle chased in the summer, ultimately rubbing salt into the wound as Joao Pedro raced through on goal and slotted the ball past Aaron Ramsdale, after capitalising on Malick Thiaw’s slip.

A denied penalty, a potential three points lost, and a summer transfer target are all the more painful experiences for the St James’ crowd, yet again, an away-day delight for the Chelsea fans who made the trip to Tyneside.
