Top five British Champions Day tips for ITV racing at Ascot on Saturday, October 17

It’s Champions Day at Ascot as we herald the finale of the British Flat racing season.

We have picked out five top tips, from the five biggest races of the day, which all happen to be Group 1s.

Let’s dig in, good luck all.

1330 (Ascot): THE QATAR RACING BRITISH CHAMPIONS LONG DISTANCE CUP (Group 1)

Daiquiri Bay (e/w)

Three successive wins, plus a previous Ascot success, and the possibility that this progressive four-year-old has not yet reached his ceiling.

Ebor victory was particularly impressive after he held on to win by a head against a large, competitive field.

However, an unproven two-mile trip and the class rise make this a calculated risk, but the price appeals each-way and William Buick is in the seat.

1405 (Ascot) THE QATAR RACING BRITISH CHAMPIONS SPRINT STAKES (Group 1)

Division

Close second in a Group 1 in France, already shows that he can compete with top sprinters at the highest level.

His latest Ascot fourth understated his ability, and might improve now he’s used to the course.

Good price currently, but it’s something you’ll want to keep an eye in the build up to the race.

1440 (Ascot) THE QATAR RACING BRITISH CHAMPIONS FILLIES & MARES STAKES (Group 1)

Spartan Nua

Impressive performance in the Yorkshire Oaks in August, and was unlucky not to reel in Kalpana.

Carries 9st 1lb, compared with 9st 7lb for the older fillies and mares and the draw is workable 4.

Her latest run is a concern - but the price appeals again.

1520 (Ascot) THE QUEEN ELIZABETH II STAKES (Group 1)

Ten Bob Tony (e/w)

Won the Queen Anne Stakes over the straight mile in June, at a big price, so can handle the course and a G1.

Hasn’t won since but has performed well.

Race conditions look suitable and he’s worth an each-way poke at the price.

1600 (Ascot) THE QATAR RACING CHAMPION STAKES (Group 1)

Bay City Roller (e/w)

Consistent performer at Group level, won the Coronation Cup at Epsom by 10 lengths and was second in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

In great form, can perform over various distances and Oisin Murphy in the saddle is another plus.

Jeff Mexico

Jeff Mexico was brought up on the west coast of Cornwall and spent most of his early life on the sea as a fisherman.

A job opportunity took him as far as Somalia, but he soon realised the pirate-life wasn't for him and he became a bag man for various bookies across the south of England.

His years of experience of on-track bookmaking has given him a unique insight into the world of gambling across a multitude of sport including horse racing, greyhounds, football, cricket, golf and much more.
