F1 news: Rafael Camara joins Haas for 2027 as Esteban Ocon prepares to leave

Haas have announced that Brazilian driver Rafael Camara will join the team for the 2027 Formula 1 season, giving the young talent his chance to compete at the highest level of motorsport.

The 21-year-old will replace Esteban Ocon, who is set to leave Haas at the end of the 2026 season.

Camara has signed a multi-year deal after impressing in the junior categories, and the move could be a big step forward for both the driver and the team.

But who is Câmara, and what can Haas fans expect from him? Sports News Blitz writer Elliot Desage explains…

Who is Rafael Camara?

Camara is one of the rising stars in motorsport and has already achieved plenty during his time in the junior categories.

The Brazilian won the Formula 3 championship in 2025 before moving up to Formula 2 for the 2026 season.

He has continued to impress, putting himself in a strong position in the championship and showing that he has the speed needed to progress.

He is also part of the Ferrari Driver Academy, which helps develop young drivers with the potential to reach Formula 1.

His performances have clearly caught the attention of Haas, who are now giving him the opportunity to prove himself on the biggest stage.

Why have Haas signed him?

Haas will be hoping Camara can help the team improve over the coming seasons.

Although he has not raced in a full Formula 1 season yet, his results in F3 and F2 suggest he has plenty of potential.

He has also had the chance to test Haas machinery, giving the team an opportunity to see how he performs in a Formula 1 car.

Moving into F1 is never easy, especially when competing against drivers with years of experience.

However, Camara will have the chance to learn from the team and build his confidence throughout his first season.

For Haas, signing a young driver could also be a good long-term decision if he develops into a consistent points scorer.

What happens to Esteban Ocon?

Camara’s arrival means Ocon will leave Haas at the end of the 2026 campaign.

The Frenchman has plenty of Formula 1 experience, including a Grand Prix victory, so replacing him will not be an easy task.

However, Haas appear ready to take a different approach by investing in a younger driver who could become an important part of their future.

It will be interesting to see where Ocon goes next and whether he can find another opportunity on the F1 grid.

Can Camara make an impact in F1?

There is no guarantee that Camara will immediately be successful, as Formula 1 is a huge step up from the junior categories.

Drivers need to manage their tyres, understand race strategy and work closely with engineers, as well as having the speed to compete against the best in the world.

Even so, his performances so far give Haas reasons to be optimistic.

His first season will probably be about learning, gaining experience and showing what he can do rather than immediately challenging for points.

What does this mean for Haas?

Overall, Camara’s signing is an exciting development for Haas as they look towards 2027.

The Brazilian has worked hard to reach this point, and now he has the opportunity to show that he belongs in Formula 1.

There will be plenty of pressure, especially as he replaces an experienced driver like Ocon, but this could be the start of an exciting new chapter in his career.

Haas fans will now be watching closely to see how Camara adapts to F1 and whether he can help the team move forward next season.
