Thomas Tuchel ‘absolutely convinced’ England are making progress ahead of Serbia clash
After four straight wins and no goals conceded in World Cup qualifying, England sit atop Group K. However, scrutiny lurks after another uninspiring performance against Andorra.
Now, Thomas Tuchel’s side face their sternest test yet: a hostile trip to the Rajko Mitic Stadium in Belgrade on Tuesday, September 9.
Tunnel of doom, and opportunity
Tuchel has warned of a “very emotional” night in a cauldron-like venue, complete with a 240-metre tunnel into a charged crowd.
“We have our first away game together in a very emotional and traditional stadium, so I think the occasion, the opponent will bring out the very best in us. I’m looking forward to it.”
Tactical shift
Breaking down Serbia’s expected 5-4-1 or low block will demand more than possession dominance.
Tuchel has leaned into traditional weapons - “long throw-ins, long kicks from the goalkeeper, crosses” - in short training windows.
He added: “We are getting better against the low block. But every match is different, we have to take advantage of the spaces they show us tomorrow.
"It is difficult to break down a low block, no secret about that, but we have progressed.”

The stakes are clear
England anticipate a physical battle: tall defenders, aggressive strikers, aerial duels, and second-ball chaos.
Serbia will meet emotion with emotion, something England must match, and something Tuchel believes England can match: “I am happy with the attitudes and I am absolutely convinced we are getting there.”
A win puts England closer to sealing qualification and answers mounting questions over Tuchel’s direction.
A stumble in Belgrade, though, could shift the narrative - and the manager’s momentum.
