ITV horse racing tips and best bets for Newmarket, Goodwood and Thirsk on Saturday, May 2

Every year, at the start of May, Sports News Blitz tipster Jeff Mexico breaks into his mother’s house and steals a pair of her shoes.

He then wears them for a few days before chucking them in the sea, as he doesn’t feel there’s enough plastic in the ocean.

His mother still hasn’t realised she is missing all these shoes, granted she has been dead since 2009.

Anyway to the horses.

Jeff Mexico’s racing tips

Prince Charles and Donald Trump met this week and waved their c*cks at each other for a bit, or something like that.

Charlie has to pretend he likes horses, because his mother and grandmother were massive fans. He prefers the company of plants to our equine friends.

Trump has to pretend he likes all sports, even though he only really likes golf and looking at himself in the mirror.

What I’m basically saying is neither can predict the winner of the first Classic of the season, like wot I can.

13:30 (Goodwood) Chelmer Stakes (Listed)

Main tip: Hassaleh

Bolted up at Newmarket over 7f on seasonal debut, winning by three lengths. Lightly raced and from the Appleby yard. Looks like a filly who could easily step into Group company after this.

Each-way: Hollywood Treasure

Won at this level and did it well. Has already won on good ground and shown she can cope with similar setups.m Likely to be overlooked behind the more fashionable yards, but her form stacks up solidly.

13:45 (Newmarket) Betfred Handicap

Main tip: Double Rush

Still relatively unexposed in sprint handicaps and comes here on the back of a recent win at this track.

Proven at Newmarket over this straight 6f is a big plus and has an advantage over rivals who may struggle to deal with the course.

Each-way tip: Sir Les Patterson

Has shown ability on AW and is now translating that to turf. Running off a mark in the mid/high-90s, but his earlier form suggests there could be more to come.

14:05 (Goodwood) Conqueror Stakes (Listed)

Main tip: Blue Bolt

Comes in with a mark around 110, which puts her right at the top of this field. Her 3yo campaign showed steady progression and this looks a launchpad into Group races, not a target in itself.

Each-way tip: Arisaig

Ran a strong race in the Celebration Mile at Goodwood. Second at Newmarket on seasonal return shows she’s fit and ready.

14:20 (Newmarket) Suffolk Handicap

Main tip: Mister Winston

Relatively lightly raced in this grade and looks the type to improve again as a 4-year-old. Mark looks workable given his upward trajectory, he’ll be in the mix late on.

Each-way tip: Botanical

Proven effectiveness at Newmarket. Has already shown he can handle large, competitive fields and stays further than 1m1f.

14:40 (Thirsk) Thirsk Hunt Cup (Handicap)

Main tip: Blue Rc

His form line shows a horse who has been consistently improving and holding form into this season. Is a course-and-distance winner with proven ability to handle the straight mile at Thirsk.

Each-way: Flight Plan

Proven over this exact test and handicap mark looks workable. Big-field experience and has run well in competitive handicaps before.

14:55 (Newmarket) HKJC WorldPool Palace House Stakes (Group 3)

Main tip: Asfoora

Already shown she can mix it in elite international sprints, including winning at York and Longchamp last season. An 8yo might raise eyebrows but is battle-hardened for races like this.

Each-way tip: Jm Jungle

Regularly runs well in big-field sprints and doesn’t get beaten far in strong company. Should have a bit of an extra edge over rivals regards race fitness. Not flashy but could get into the frame.

15:35 (Newmarket) Betfred 2,000 Guineas (Group 1)

Main tip: Distant Storm

Was right at the top of the 2yo tree and notably placed in the Dewhurst. Charlie Appleby / William Buick combo is extremely potent in Classics and arrives in strong early-season form.

Each-way: King’s Trail

Lightly raced compared to his rivals, but comes here race-fit. Bred to improve for a mile and beyond. Still open to significant improvement.

Jeff Mexico

Jeff Mexico was brought up on the west coast of Cornwall and spent most of his early life on the sea as a fisherman.

A job opportunity took him as far as Somalia, but he soon realised the pirate-life wasn't for him and he became a bag man for various bookies across the south of England.

His years of experience of on-track bookmaking has given him a unique insight into the world of gambling across a multitude of sport including horse racing, greyhounds, football, cricket, golf and much more.
