How Morecambe bounced from the brink to become the National League’s entertainers

The revival of Morecambe FC has been an incredible process to watch, as the Shrimps defy the odds to even compete at a National League level.

Under the guidance of the first Sikh manager in the English game and with a hastily assembled team following the lifting of embargos, the club are on a mission to survive the wilderness of the fifth tier and build for the future.

Here, Sports News Blitz’s Samuel Leasley explores the craziness of the last few months at Morecambe and how they have become a must-watch team for goal lovers.

A new era at the Shrimps

Despite progress reportedly being made in April 2025 for the sale of the club, the actions of then-owner Jason Whittingham would delay proceedings by five months and nearly cost Morecambe their existence.

Administration loomed in July as all club directors were sacked and a last-minute outside takeover was never sealed, leading to the Shrimps ceasing all football operations at the end of the month.

The National League would then suspend the club and confirm their opening three fixtures would be postponed until further notice.

With just six days until a potential winding-up order was processed, a deal was finally sanctioned between Whittingham and Panjab Warriors, allowing the club to appoint new staff, pay remaining staff and players and most importantly, sign new players.

The new ownership would appoint new manager Ashvir Singh Johal on August 19th, making him the youngest manager in the top five tiers at 30 years old and the first Sikh manager in English football history.

Singh Johal had had a spell as Notts County’s B team manager, having previously worked alongside Cesc Fabregas at Italian side Como in the club’s under-23s.

A squad full of new signings

With only three days until their opening fixture against Altrincham, Morecambe only had five senior players registered on their books and desperately needed to fill their squad.

12 players were brought in on free transfers across these three days, with a 16-man squad eventually being named for the first fixture of the season.

Notable signings included former Leicester youth prospect Harry Panayiotou, defender Alie Sesay, after a spell in Vietnam, and goalkeeper Archie Mair rejoined the club after a previous spell on loan the year prior.

Yet despite all the change, it was Morecambe’s 2024 player of the year Ben Tollitt who would strike first against Altrincham and set up a dramatic 98th-minute winner for Daniel Ogwuru to send the home fans wild.

Goals galore at both ends

The follow-up to their opening day win was underwhelming to say the least, as the club would lose four in a row whilst shipping 12 goals in the process.

With such a frantic summer turnaround and a lack of any pre-season preparation, it was clear the squad and manager needed time to gel together as Singh Johal’s style had seen glimpses of magic but little return.

The last two fixtures for Morecambe have certainly provided confidence to their attacking options, yet their defensive frailty is certainly a cause for concern.

The Shrimps traded blows with Solihull Moors in a 4-4 draw before snatching a late 4-3 win over Wealdstone after throwing away a three-goal lead.

In just seven fixtures, fans have witnessed 31 goals whilst watching the seaside club, more than you would have seen watching Forest Green, the league leaders, for 11 fixtures.

Morecambe currently sit 22nd on seven points but have as many as four games in hand on the teams above, meaning relegation could be banished from their mind with a good run of form.

Future progress?

The club remains in a stable condition at the time of writing, and new signings continue to provide strong support to the squad.

Zimbabwean striker Admiral Muskwe has scored three goals in his last two fixtures, and the club has recently announced the signing of former Newcastle man Rolando Aarons as they continue to add depth.

The club face Halifax Town in their next fixture, where a win could possibly see the Shrimps jump to 16th in the table.

It is still too early to tell, but after all the turmoil of the last six months, the club finally looks to be moving in the right direction and towards a strong future.
