F1 news: Does George Russell need to toughen up as his title hopes fade?

The 2026 Formula 1 season has been a thrilling introduction to the 2026 regulations, despite the hiccups.

Mercedes have claimed their place as the fastest team, with their two drivers battling it out for the Drivers’ Championship title.

The teams chasing them are Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren. However, the fight for the Drivers’ title is entirely in the Silver Arrows’ corner.

The young Italian making a name for himself

Mercedes youngster Andrea Kimi Antonelli has been leading the standings since the Japanese Grand Prix back in March.

16 rounds into the season, the Italian has accumulated 320 points, 84 points ahead of team-mate George Russell.

Antonelli is only in his second Formula 1 season, both with Mercedes. Russell, meanwhile, has been in the sport for eight years now, and has been with Mercedes since 2022.

When the season began and Mercedes were clearly the fastest, it was expected that Russell’s experience and skill would give him the upper hand in the title race if the team were to maintain and build on their early advantage.

While the competition from the other teams has increased, Mercedes are still the team to beat on a good day.

However, the driver to beat has not been Russell. It has been 20-year-old Antonelli.

Where is Russell missing out?

Russell’s biggest problem this season has arguably been his inability to match Antonelli’s consistency.

While the gap between the two drivers has been widened by technical failures and retirements, the Italian has made better use of the opportunities he has had.

With Mercedes providing both drivers with a car capable of winning races, Russell has not been able to turn his experience into a significant advantage over his younger team-mate.

Antonelli has won nine races compared to Russell’s three, suggesting that the difference is not simply down to luck or reliability.

There is also the mental side of the battle.

Russell entered the season with a genuine opportunity to fight for his first Drivers’ Championship, but instead finds himself chasing a team-mate who is still in only his second season.

That can bring its own pressure, particularly when the younger driver continues to deliver results.

Russell is still a talented driver, and his win in Baku showed that he can still be competitive.

However, if he wants to turn this championship fight around, he needs to find a way to respond to Antonelli’s pace and consistency rather than allowing the growing points gap to define his season.

Can Russell bounce back in Singapore?

Russell does not have to wait long for his next test.

The Singapore Grand Prix weekend runs from October 9-11, but the Brit faces an uphill battle after Mercedes confirmed he will start Sunday's race from the back of the grid following an engine change.

The power unit failure that forced his retirement in Malaysia has dealt another blow to his title hopes.

Mercedes will also run different car specifications this Sprint weekend, with Russell returning to the older package while Antonelli keeps the latest upgrades.

The move will help the team understand why its recent developments failed to deliver the expected performance, but it also gives Russell a different challenge as he looks to recover lost ground.

According to former Head of Operations at Red Bull Richard Hopkins, who spoke exclusively to iPredicta, Russell needs to be “more like Michael [Schumacher].”

“I think George has shown weakness this year. I think he's shown weakness on the track, and he's shown weakness off the track.

“Any driver that turns around, and there have been a couple of moments, and says, ‘This isn't one of my favourite circuits. I never go well here’, that is absolutely letting your guard down.

“To let people know you have vulnerability, that you do have weaknesses, even if it's just in a throwaway comment saying, ‘I don't particularly like this track’.

“Crikey. He's got to stop doing that. He's got to be a little bit more Michael [Schumacher].

“There have been a lot of head-scratching moments for George but he's been a bit unlucky. He's had some technical failures where Kimi hasn't.

“But he's also been outdriven as well, genuinely. Even this weekend [Bahrain/Malaysia GP], Kimi was behind him, getting onto the radio to the team saying, ‘I'm quicker than George’ and then just overtook him and off he went.

“So, mathematically, George can still win the championship, but blooming heck, I mean, Kimi needs to have both hands tied behind his back in order for that to happen.

“I'm sure he's still got Toto's support and Mercedes’ support. He won in Baku, and he was quite dominant in Baku as well. So it was almost like he had his mojo back.

“Obviously, the engine failure has widened the gap more than it would have been, now going to Singapore thinking, ‘I'm out of the championship’. So it has swung the other way.

“I think there's still possibly a little bit of vulnerability to be seen in Kimi, but boy, the guy's strong for such a youngster. He's got to do something drastically wrong to lose the championship now.

“George hasn't become a slow driver. I think he's absolutely had the wind knocked out of his sails this season because this young kid has come along and has challenged him, and is arguably quicker than him.

“And that's got to be tough, right? That's got to be tough. But you've got to be mentally strong to power through that.”

The Singapore Grand Prix will provide Russell with another opportunity to close the gap and show that he is still in the fight.

However, with Antonelli holding an 84-point advantage, Russell needs to start delivering consistently if he is to have any realistic chance of turning the championship battle around.
