EFL weekly round-up: Louie Barry setback, Will Lankshear on fire, free agents available

Hello and welcome to our weekly round-up of the news in the English Football League, along with a few talking points as well.

In this week’s edition, we will be looking at which free agents could improve clubs now that the transfer window has closed, writes Sports News Blitz’s Rob Beezley.

The free-agent market is the only hunting ground for those teams now.

We will also be looking into a forward who has suffered a long-term injury and could be out for quite a while.

Also on the agenda are two clubs in differing form – one is on the up, the other has hit a roadblock.

Could we have already found the Championship’s top scorer as well?

Barry out for three months

Sheffield Wednesday forward Louie Barry has started the season strong – he has three goals and an assist to his name in just four games so far this campaign.

That start has been hampered, though, by an ankle-ligament injury that will keep the 23-year-old sidelined for at least three months.

Whilst this will give others a chance at the Owls, this is a major blow as they lose one of their star performers for the time being.

Which free agents are available?

The summer transfer window slammed shut on Tuesday evening, with many clubs happy with what they have acquired.

However, a few teams may still be looking to the free-agent market.

Among the names seeking a new home are Adam Jackson, who Lincoln City released from his contract on Thursday.

‘Jacko’ made over 150 appearances across a six-year stay with the Imps.

Connor Wickham is another who could well add something to a team’s arsenal.

Levi Sutton and Jonny Williams can likewise bring a wealth of experience to a lower league side.

Is your team’s form up or down?

Wigan Athletic picked up a much-needed first win of the season on Wednesday evening.

That relieving victory leaves Preston North End as the only side on zero points in the EFL.

In contrast, Millwall have shipped eight goals in their past two games after a strong start to the campaign.

The Lions have lost to both Southampton and Wrexham this week, and that comes after scoring five goals in their first two matches.

Lankshear is Middlesbrough’s secret weapon

Ok, so let me begin by saying that when you sign a striker from Tottenham Hotspur for a good fee, you expect a return.

However, it’s not always expected so soon – and Will Lankshear has hit the ground running for his new club.

The 21-year-old has four goals from his opening four games as he looks to hit form early on in the season and get a head start on the rest of the league’s goal scorers.
