Championship survival fight: Relegation battle heating up with nine games left
With just nine games left in the Championship, the scrap for survival is intensifying.
With the table so tight, every result matters. Only a handful of points separate the sides in the bottom six, meaning every match now carries enormous significance.
Here, Sports News Blitz writer Liberty Nicholson-Hulse takes a look at how the bottom six are shaping up as the relegation battle intensifies.
QPR: Worrying slide towards survival fight
Not long ago, QPR were flirting with the play-offs. Now, they sit 18th, nine points clear of the drop, but looking shaky.
Their 1-0 defeat at Birmingham on Wednesday was a stark reminder of their struggles. Rangers didn’t manage a single shot in the first half, while Birmingham scored early and controlled the game.
Saturday’s trip to fourth-bottom Leicester is a key match. A loss in the Midlands could bring them back into danger, as their recent form has been patchy.
Oxford United: Form when it matters
Oxford United claimed a crucial 1-0 win over Blackburn on Wednesday, their third straight victory for the first time in over a year.
Jamie Donley’s first goal for the club proved decisive, lifting Oxford out of the bottom two and within a point of Blackburn.
Confidence is building at the Kassam Stadium, and momentum at this stage can be the difference between panic and survival.
Next up, Oxford make an away trip to Sheffield Wednesday, who are clinging to life at the very bottom of the table.
Form suggests that Oxford could extend their streak, and a win could push them further clear of danger and build their momentum.
Blackburn: Stuck in the scrap
For Blackburn, it’s been a sobering week. Their defeat to fellow strugglers Oxford leaves them 20th with 39 points, still dangerously close to the drop.
Recent performances have dipped, and they now find themselves firmly in the relegation battle.
At the weekend, they welcome fellow strugglers Portsmouth to Ewood Park in a game they simply must win if they are to stay in touch with safety.
Portsmouth: Hanging on
Portsmouth sit 19th, just two points above the relegation zone. Their 2-1 defeat to Swansea on Tuesday did little to ease their concerns and ensured the side remains just above the drop.
There was also late heartbreak at Ewood Park last weekend against Blackburn, where a late Connor Ogilvie goal looked set to extend Portsmouth’s advantage over the bottom clubs. Instead, the game slipped away in the closing stages, turning what could have been a huge boost in the survival race into another painful setback.

West Brom: Showing spirit without results
West Brom are arguably the most desperate side of all. Since beating QPR in late December, they haven’t won a league game.
Every remaining fixture counts, and West Brom must treat their final nine matches as cup finals and approach each one on the front foot if they are to avoid trouble.
Their 1-1 draw with Southampton, thanks to a late Cyle Larin equaliser for the visitors, only highlights their frustration. Despite some encouraging signs, particularly in the second half, Albion now sit in the relegation zone.
Leicester City: Crucial step forward
Leicester moved out of the bottom three with a 2-0 win over Bristol City, ending a four-game losing streak at home and a month-long winless run.
Gary Rowett finally delivered a victory, though the club’s six-point deduction still leaves them hovering just above the drop.
Their next big test is QPR at home, a clash that could either strengthen their survival hopes or drag them back into danger.
Looking ahead
The next round of fixtures is packed with clashes that could be season-defining.
QPR face Leicester in a clash that could swing the balance for both sides, while Blackburn host Portsmouth in a must-win game at Ewood Park.
Oxford United travel to Sheffield Wednesday, looking to extend their momentum against a side who are already resigned to the drop.
West Brom take on Hull City at The Hawthorns, knowing they need maximum points to start climbing out of danger. With nine games remaining, every result will count.
If current form is anything to go by, it looks increasingly likely that West Brom and Leicester will be the sides to drop, with the remaining teams battling fiercely to stay up.
The fight to stay up will go down to the very wire, with nothing settled yet.
