WNBA news: Chicago Sky star Angel Reese announces plans to trademark ‘mebounds’ moniker

Chicago Sky star Angel Reese made headlines this week when she announced plans to trademark the word ‘mebounds’, a slang term coined by critics to describe the power forward rebounding her own missed shots.

Reese announces trademark plans

‘Mebounds’ refer to the star’s unique ability to secure her own missed shots at the rim, as highlighted during a recent game between the Sky and reigning WNBA champions New York Liberty, where Reese recorded five offensive rebounds in a 19-second span less than three minutes into the clash.

“Whoever came up with the ‘mebounds’ thing, y’all ate that up, because mebounds, rebounds, keybounds… anything that comes off that board, it’s mine,” Reese said in a TikTok video on Saturday.

“And a brand? That’s six figures right there,” she continued, referencing her trademark application idea.

“The trolling – I love when y’all do it, because the ideas be good!”

Record-breaking rebound numbers

The 23-year-old averaged a double-double last term and moreover broke retired Minnesota Lynx legend Sylvia Fowles’ record for most rebounds in a single WNBA season, although the feat was later surpassed by 2024 MVP A’ja Wilson following Reese’s season-ending wrist injury.

In the end, Reese averaged 11.9 rebounds per game, with 4.8 of those offensive in nature – another league record.

She also ranked third in defensive rebounds per game with 7.1.

“Statistically, all the rebounds that I get aren’t always just mine,” Reese added in her post, emphasising the teamwork behind her rebounding prowess.

“They’re the defence’s too or somebody else on my team.”

Online scrutiny inspires decision

Reese has subsequently followed through with her promise and filed a trademark application for the term, which covers merchandise including hats, t-shirts, and sweatshirts.

Since her debut with Chicago Sky, the Maryland native has been the subject of intense social media scrutiny, often around her tendency to rebound missed lay-ups.

And when putbacks are missed or blocked, the criticism only grows.

The Sky star – who scored the first triple-double of her WNBA career during Chicago’s recent 78-66 win over the Connecticut Sun – is not backing down, though, as she moves to make that discourse work for her.
