Sports News Blitz betting and casino guide: What is totals (over/under) betting?
Totals betting, also known as over/under betting, is a type of sports wagering where you bet on the total combined score of both teams in a game, rather than on the outcome of the game itself.
The sportsbook sets a line indicating the total number of points, goals, runs, or other scoring units they expect both teams to score combined. Bettors then wager on whether the actual total score will be over or under that line.
Here, Sports News Blitz explains one of the simpler betting methods out there.
How totals betting works
Total Line: The sportsbook sets a total line, which represents the expected total number of points, goals, runs, or other scoring units in the game. For example, in a basketball game, the total line might be set at 215.5 points.
Over Bet: If you believe the total combined score of both teams will be higher than the total line set by the sportsbook, you would place an ‘over’ bet. For example, if you bet the over on a basketball game with a total line of 215.5 points, you would win if the final combined score is 216 points or more.
Under Bet: If you believe the total combined score of both teams will be lower than the total line set by the sportsbook, you would place an ‘under’ bet. Using the same example, if you bet the under on a basketball game with a total line of 215.5 points, you would win if the final combined score is 215 points or fewer.
Push: If the final combined score is exactly equal to the total line, it’s called a push and all bets are refunded. For example, if the final score of a basketball game is 215 points in the example above, bets on both the over and the under would result in a push.
Odds: Odds for totals betting are typically -110 on both the over and the under, meaning you would need to wager $110 to win $100 (plus your original stake back) on a successful bet.
Totals betting is available in various sports, including football, basketball, hockey, baseball, and soccer.
It’s a popular betting option for bettors who have a strong opinion on how high-scoring or low-scoring a game will be, regardless of the outcome.
