Sir AP McCoy: I couldn’t give up on Constitution Hill over hurdles

Sir AP McCoy has told William Hill that he doesn’t think connections should be giving up on Constitution Hill’s career over hurdles, despite another fall in the Fighting Fifth at the weekend.

Speaking on William Hill’s latest Inside Track episode, McCoy reacted to Saturday’s dramatic events at Newcastle, and was forthright in his views on what Nicky Henderson and Michael Buckley should do next:

“I actually thought when he jumped the first hurdle that his jumping was all good, and then it was just like he had a brain freeze. As for what they do next, ultimately, he’s a racehorse. He’s fallen a few times, but lots of horses have falls. If it was up to me, I’d be way too stubborn to give up [over hurdles]. He’s way too good a horse.

“I’d have to carry on over hurdles – he’s a racehorse and he gets really well looked after. It’s a hard one, but I couldn’t personally give up on him over hurdles. However, it makes you think, is he just like one of those heavyweight boxers who used to beat everyone and then, once he got knocked out a couple of times, does he just go mentally? Whatever decision they make, it’ll be a tough one.”

Geraghty suggests Constitution Hill needs jumping “rehab”

Fellow William Hill ambassador, Barry Geraghty, also offered his view on Constitution Hill’s issues, which will prick the ears of many, given his close association with the horse:

“I’d be open to going down the Flat route [with Constitution Hill], but I’d also be open to exploring further options as regards what you can do with his jumping first. I wouldn’t suggest going novice chasing with him, I don’t think that’d be the right thing on the back of those falls.

“I would try some sort of rehab with his jumping somewhere, perhaps with Yogi Breisner. Yogi is amazing, I’ve seen it myself, and he does think really outside the box. It’s just down to connections to decide whether they want to roll the dice again [over obstacles].”
