Premier League news: Top five Tottenham vs Chelsea games of the modern era

Chelsea travel to Tottenham on Saturday for a London derby that promises to be as tenacious and entertaining as ever, with both clubs currently fighting for the top four.

Ahead of the showdown at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Sports News Blitz writer Will Thomas ranks the top five games between the two sides in the modern era.

5. Blues win seven-goal thriller – December 2024

Expectations were high going into the derby at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last season and the action certainly didn’t disappoint.

After conceding two early goals from costly Marc Cucurella slips, Chelsea fought back to steal a 4-3 win through two penalties from Cole Palmer.

The Chelsea end duly went into bedlam and took the early Christmas present home to Stamford Bridge.

4. Chelsea capitalise on Spurs chaos – November 2023

With Spurs sitting atop the league at the start of Ange Postecoglou’s tenure, hopes were high that they would beat the Blues for a second time at their glorious new stadium.

And their prayers were seemingly answered as Spurs flew out of the traps thanks to Dejan Kulusevski scoring in the sixth minute.

However, a Cristian Romero red card resulted in chaos and Palmer dispatched a penalty just before half time.

Proceedings further spiraled out of control when Destiny Udogie received a second yellow to leave the home side with nine men.

Despite the lack of numbers, Postecoglou continued to demand a high line, which allowed Chelsea to run through and give Nicolas Jackson his first Chelsea hat trick, thus laying the first seed of doubt in Postecoglou’s reign.

3. Alli breaks Spurs hoodoo at Stamford Bridge – April 2018

An emphatic 3-1 win in 2018 finally broke Tottenham’s long wait for a victory at the Bridge, with Spurs not having won at Chelsea since 1990 – the days of the old First Division.

Álvaro Morata opened the scoring for the hosts, but an equaliser from Christian Eriksen and a brace from Dele Alli would send the Spurs end crazy as Mauricio Pochettino’s men walked away with a historic three points.

Spurs subsequently moved eight points clear of their London rivals in the table, which proved too much for Chelsea to close in the end as Tottenham clinched third place and the Blues could only manage fifth.

2. Tuchel and Conte clash after dramatic Spurs equaliser – August 2022

After a dramatic game that saw Harry Kane snatch a late equaliser to cancel out Reece James’ apparent 77th-minute winner, managers Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte clashed in a truly unforgettable moment.

Tuchel had celebrated wildly when James scored to make it 2-1, running down the touchline, while Conte found himself jumping on the Spurs bench after Kane restored parity from a corner.

At full time, both managers locked hands without letting go, which caused chaos as the German and Italian had to be separated in a proper spectacle.

1. Battle of the Bridge – May 2017

The so-called ‘Battle of the Bridge’ is the game most people think about when it comes to the rivalry between Spurs and Chelsea.

Indeed, the wider ramifications of the match make it one of the best in Premier League history.

Spurs were fighting for the title with Leicester City and simply had to win against defending champions Chelsea in order to keep their hopes alive.

Goals from Son Heung-min and Kane gave Spurs a commanding lead at half time over a Chelsea side who had disappointed throughout the season.

Unfortunately for the visitors, dramatic strikes from Gary Cahill and Eden Hazard would level the game late on, sending the Chelsea fans into dreamland at the full-time whistle as Leicester were crowned champions.

While Jamie Vardy and company were having a party, there was complete and utter chaos at the Bridge, with Spurs and Chelsea players pushing and shoving all the way down the tunnel – a fitting end to a match-up dubbed the Battle of the Bridge.
