Premier League: Five talking points from Nottingham Forest 0-1 Arsenal

Premier League champions Arsenal claimed a hard-fought 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday, October 18, to keep pace with Manchester City.

Here, Sports News Blitz writer Monzer Hussain breaks down five talking points from the City Ground, where Mikel Arteta’s Gunners banked three vital points.

1. Forest’s organisation makes Arsenal work for the points

This was another hard-earned result for Arsenal at the City Ground, where their previous two Premier League visits had finished goalless.

Forest’s compact 5-4-1 made the task difficult again. Their clear plan was to limit space in dangerous areas, preventing Arsenal from finding a rhythm close to goal.

Arsenal had plenty of possession, but moving the ball around Forest’s defensive shape was easier than playing through it.

The challenge was turning that control into opportunities rather than simply keeping the ball.

2. Possession fails to produce enough attacking threat

Arsenal finished with almost 74% possession but managed only one shot on target, compared with Forest’s two.

They did not register an effort on target before half-time.

It was also their sixth consecutive match across the Premier League and Champions League without a first-half goal.

That pattern raises questions about why they are taking so long to become effective in attack.

Forest deserve credit for their organisation, but Arsenal’s attacking quality should still be examined.

For a team defending the title, there is a reasonable expectation that control of possession produces more consistent danger.

3. Madueke brings a different approach

Eberechi Eze was replaced at half-time after struggling to influence the game. His withdrawal raised a question about how Arsenal could make better use of their attacking options against such a compact defence.

Noni Madueke offered something different. His willingness to drive at defenders gave Arsenal a more direct threat, and that approach eventually produced the decisive moment.

In the 80th minute, he cut inside from the left and struck towards goal.

The deflection off Jair Cunha helped beat Matz Sels, but Madueke’s initiative had created the opportunity. Arsenal needed someone to force the issue, and he did.

4. Defensive interventions protect the result

Arsenal’s attacking difficulties made their defensive work particularly important.

Ezri Konsa’s late recovery challenge on Liam Delap was a significant contribution to protecting the lead.

Declan Rice also intervened to deny Chris Wood as Forest searched for an equaliser.

Those moments mattered because the game remained competitive after Madueke’s goal.

Arsenal had found their breakthrough, but still needed concentration and individual defensive quality to secure the points.

5. A valuable win leaves questions unanswered

Six wins from seven league matches is a strong start to a title defence. Winning when the performance is not flowing is valuable, and Arsenal found a way to do that here.

The result does not remove the attacking concerns, however. One shot on target after so much possession suggests there is still work to do in creating chances.

It reinforces the argument that Arsenal needed another quality attacking option in the summer.

Whether January recruitment becomes necessary should depend on how the existing players perform over the coming weeks.

This was an important victory, but not a convincing attacking display.
