Pep Guardiola gives Phil Foden reality check as Man City celebrate Premier League milestone

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has sent a clear message to midfielder Phil Foden, praising his influence this season but urging him to refine parts of his game.

His words came after City celebrated a historic Premier League attacking record following their 3-0 win over Crystal Palace.

A record-breaking victory

City’s victory at Selhurst Park on Sunday was emphatic, with Erling Haaland scoring twice and Foden adding a fine strike to complete the scoring.

The result kept City close to Premier League leaders Arsenal, maintaining pressure as the title race enters a critical phase.

City’s 3-0 victory at Crystal Palace on Sunday saw Guardiola’s team reach 150 Premier League wins, where they have scored at least three goals, a record achieved in just 358 matches, faster than any other manager in Premier League history.

The previous benchmarks were set by Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger, making Guardiola’s latest achievement a notable addition to his Premier League legacy.

‘He didn’t play at his best’

Despite the occasion, Guardiola’s focus stayed fixed on performance details, particularly regarding Foden.

While the England international has been one of City’s most productive attackers this season, Guardiola insisted there is still room for improvement in his overall game.

After Foden’s goal against Palace - his sixth in four league games - Guardiola said that although Foden’s defensive work rate was excellent, aspects of his play on the ball were not at their best.

"I know people may think differently but I think Phil today was not good, he didn’t play at his best," said Guardiola.

"He lost a lot of balls, he was in a rush with decisions and was so anxious. He has to keep the ball and be associated with the other ones and in the right moments make explosions that only he has in terms of goals and assists.”

"Before he arrives there, he has to be more calm. But he wants to do it well and sometimes he makes situations not clear,” he added, before going on to praise the England international.

“Phil in terms of work ethic defensively, how he presses, how he comes back, he is incredible.

“Even with my opinion today, one of the best at the end was Phil. He ran maybe the most in the team and scored a goal because close to the box he was unbelievable.

Guardiola’s remarks underline his broader managerial approach: even his most influential players are expected to develop continuously.

Foden’s recent form has been a bright spot for City, and Guardiola has previously described him as a joy to manage, highlighting his willingness to help the team and create chances.

There is no doubt he will continue to be a positive influence as City strive to hold a place in the Premier League title race firmly.
