Chelsea women bounce back with convincing 3-0 win over Brighton

Chelsea Women ended their final Women’s Super League (WSL) match of 2025 in strong fashion by defeating Brighton and Hove Albion 3-0 at Broadfield Stadium on Sunday, December 14.

The Blues returned to winning ways after their first league defeat in 34 games last week, a loss to Everton that ended their remarkable unbeaten run.

Back to winning ways

In a performance that combined quality moments with controlled dominance, Chelsea took the lead just before half-time.

French winger Sandy Baltimore produced a moment of individual brilliance to break the deadlock in the 42nd minute, curling a superb strike into the top corner to give her side the advantage at the break.

Brighton started brightly and defended well for long periods, but Chelsea’s pressure eventually told.

Early in the second half, Brighton defender Caitlin Hayes inadvertently turned a floated cross from Erin Cuthbert into her own net, doubling the visitors’ lead.

Chelsea kept their foot on the gas, and the third goal came in the 73rd minute.

Substitute Sam Kerr was influential in the move, driving at the Brighton defence and teeing up Alyssa Thompson, who finished from close range to seal the win.

The victory lifts Chelsea back into second place in the WSL table. They sit six points behind leaders Manchester City and two ahead of Arsenal as they head into the winter break.

Bompastor ‘pleased’ with Blues’ performance

Speaking after the game, Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor praised her squad.

“I think we had a complete performance today from the beginning until the end. If you look at the statistics, it will probably show that we were really dominant.

“I'm very pleased with the performance and the result, to be able to travel here and to put on that display. We've scored some great goals, three goals, and a clean sheet. There were a lot of good individual performances as well.

“I think Brighton were in a really good dynamic in terms of results and performances, so they were pretty confident. I think they have a lot of quality in their squad and the way we performed today didn't allow them to show that too much.”

Chelsea will now prepare for the winter break before returning in January with renewed focus as they look to close the gap on Manchester City and challenge for the WSL title in the second half of the season.

Before then, a UEFA Women’s Champions League game against Wolfsburg on Wednesday, December 17 and a Women’s League Cup quarter-final against Liverpool on Sunday, December 21 await.
