NFL Week 3 - Detroit Lions take on Baltimore Ravens in blockbuster Monday Night Football clash: How to watch, analysis and more
Week 3 of the NFL season is almost upon us, and Monday Night Football tosses up a brilliant matchup between two of the best teams in the National Football League.
The Detroit Lions (1-1) hit the road for a big-time matchup against the Baltimore Ravens (1-1) on Monday night.
Both teams will be looking to grab a statement win after losing their opening games before bouncing back to resounding victories in Week 2.
Here, Sports News Blitz’s NFL writer Finley Young takes a look at the game of the weekend.
They couldn’t, could they?
The Ravens and coach John Harbaugh have a lot of history on their side in this series as they look to continue their dominant record versus the Lions.
Baltimore currently holds a 6-1 record against Detroit, with the latter's last victory coming at home in 2005. Yes, 2005, you read that right.
If the Lions can’t pull off the big on-the-road upset, then the Ravens' winning streak will extend to six straight victories across the last 20 years - something Dan Campbell will be keen to put an end to.
Roaring Lions
There are positives for Detroit, though, as they come into this game off the back of a dominant display versus the Chicago Bears.
Quarterback Jared Goff threw for an impressive 334 yards and five TDs as the Lions put up 52 points against their NFC North rivals.
Whilst star Wide Receiver, Amon-Ra St. Brown, also looked back to his brilliant best, hauling in 115 yards and three TDs.
Despite this, Dan Campbell’s men will have to be almost flawless on both offence and defence to beat this impressive Ravens side.
Three-time MVP?
John Harbaugh’s team fly into this Week 3 matchup after they put up 40 points for the second successive game against division rivals, the Cleveland Browns.
Superstar Quarterback, Lamar Jackson, has shown some early MVP contender form with impeccable performances through the first two games.
Jackson has thrown for 434 yards and six touchdowns on 68.8% completion with 83 yards and another score on the ground.
Mistakes have been few and far between for Jackson. The former two-time MVP winner is one of the toughest players to contain in the NFL, and the Lions’ defence will have their work cut out to stop him.
King Henry
The Ravens also have the king of “angry runs” himself, Derrick Henry, in the backfield.
Despite putting up a below-par performance in Week 2, the bulldozing running back still remains a key element to the Ravens' offence.
This will be Henry’s first performance versus the Lions since 2020, when he ran for 147 yards with the Tennessee Titans, and he will be hoping for more of that on Monday.
I’m expecting a high-scoring game with two of the best NFL offences on display. However, there are some stars on both defences that need to be talked about.
Super safeties
Lions Safety, Brian Branch, is off to an incredible start to his NFL career.
Through his first 33 games played, Branch has recorded 30 passes defended, 18 tackles for loss, seven interceptions, three sacks and three forced fumbles.
That is some fantastic numbers, and Branch will need to be at his best to try and limit this Ravens offence to as few points as possible.
In fact, this game welcomes the top two Pro Football Focus (PFF) qualified safeties, with Baltimore’s Kyle Hamilton the other.
Hamilton is always one to watch out for on Baltimore’s defence, having already posted 14 tackles, one for loss, two passes defended and a forced fumble in his first two games.
Let’s see what he can do against St. Brown on Monday night.
This game is going to be a cracker, and I’m expecting a touchdown frenzy on Monday night football at the M&T Bank Stadium.
Enjoy another epic week of NFL football, everyone!
