Newcastle news: Harvey Barnes v Anthony Gordon – Who should Eddie Howe start on the left wing?
Eddie Howe’s comments in his press conference before Newcastle’s game against Leeds have sparked some controversy.
The 48-year-old revealed the real reason why he continues to start Anthony Gordon on the left wing over Harvey Barnes – a question many fans have been asking in recent weeks.
These remarks have fuelled debate among Newcastle supporters as to whether it is fair to sacrifice an in-form Barnes to accommodate an out-of-form Gordon.
Here, Sports News Blitz writer Charlotte Allsop examines the ongoing debate.
Optimising attacking output
When asked about his decision to keep Barnes on the right when playing with Gordon, Howe explained: “I don’t think Anthony enjoys playing on the right. Harvey is a lot more open to it and enjoys the freedom there. That’s why.
“It doesn’t mean I can’t, but if a player doesn’t want to play there, you can’t really force them to as you won’t get the same level of performances.”
Howe’s comments have given insight into his man-management and thought process in tactical decisions.
By acknowledging Gordon’s discomfort playing on the right and Barnes’ willingness to step into another role, Howe shows that team selection is down to more than form alone.
The Newcastle boss believes that forcing a player into a position they don’t feel comfortable playing in would reduce their effectiveness, especially when confidence is crucial to maximise output in the Premier League.
In other words, playing Barnes on the right is more about optimising Newcastle’s attackers than favouritism.
Given recent performances, though, it wouldn’t be a shock to say that Barnes should take priority over Gordon, but the Newcastle manager does not share the same thoughts.
Howe recognises Barnes’ versatility, saying: “Harvey can play across the midfield – he’s good between the lines, he’s done well this year.
“His number one position is the left, but he’s a goal threat on both sides. He’s a good all-round player and he turned the game for us on Sunday.”

Considering the stats
Another angle to consider is whether or not Anthony Gordon deserves to play on the left over Harvey Barnes based purely on stats.
This season, Barnes has been one of Newcastle’s most in-form attackers, scoring five goals in 20 Premier League appearances.
In comparison, Gordon has scored just two goals in his 16 league appearances, both of these being penalties, which has had fans questioning whether he should be given priority on the left over a more in-form Barnes.
Before the clash against Leeds, the England international spoke about his form.
He said: “Statistically, I haven’t been where I want to be as a player – I want to be right at the very top – but for the most part, I’ve had consistency in my performances.”
Gordon also talked about how he believes stats can be misleading, stating: “Nowadays, stats are all that matters it seems and that’s ruined football a little bit.
“You can play well, do so much for your team, but if you don’t score or assist, you haven’t played well.
“I don’t really think about it because ultimately I’m trying. There’s nothing more I can do than that.
“I haven’t had too many chances where I should have scored. If I had, that would bother me.”
Many fans have claimed that Gordon’s performances have not warranted a continuous place in the starting eleven, but in spite of the scrutiny and questions, Gordon remains confident in his ability and overall contribution to this Newcastle side.
However, with Barnes delivering in clutch moments and Gordon still struggling for consistency in front of goal, Howe’s faith in his winger will need to start being justified by results.
