MMA news: Ilia Topuria vs Justin Gaethje, Alex Pereira vs Cyril Gane headline UFC Freedom 250
The Ultimate Fighting Championship has officially revealed the fight card for its historic event at the White House, set to take place on June 14 as part of ‘America250’ celebrations.
While the line-up features two title bouts and a host of popular fighters, the announcement has been met with a wave of disappointment from fans who feel the “greatest-ever” card failed to materialise, writes Sports News Blitz’s Samuel Faris-Clark.
Main events revealed
Headlining UFC Freedom 250 on the South Lawn is a lightweight title unification bout between champion Ilia Topuria and interim titleholder Justin Gaethje.
In the co-main event, former light heavyweight king Alex Pereira moves up to heavyweight to face Ciryl Gane for an interim belt as champion Tom Aspinall recovers from injury.
The undercard includes exciting names like Sean O’Malley, Michael Chandler, and Bo Nickal.
On paper, it is a solid, pay-per-view worthy card.
However, the context surrounding the announcement is what has left a sour taste in the mouths of many MMA enthusiasts.
For months, UFC CEO Dana White hyped the event as the most spectacular in promotion history, leading to rampant speculation about “dream fights”.
Fans craved a showdown between pound-for-pound kings Islam Makhachev and Ilia Topuria or a legacy-defining bout between Alex Pereira and all-time great Jon Jones.
Instead, the reality feels like a classic case of over-promise and under-deliver.
Rumours of changes
The sentiment of disappointment is fueled by reports that the original plan fell apart at the last minute.
Indeed, White admitted that a fight fell through just days before the announcement, forcing his team to scramble all night to reassemble the card.
While he denied that a Makhachev-Topuria bout was the one that collapsed, he confirmed that Gaethje was a late addition and that Topuria wasn’t originally scheduled for the event either.
Furthermore, two of the sport’s biggest potential draws are conspicuously absent.
White vehemently shot down any notion of Jon Jones participating, citing the heavyweight’s chronic hip issues, and while Conor McGregor is in talks to return, it won’t be for this event.
Consequently, the UFC White House card arrives with a sense of what could have been.
While it remains a unique and significant event, the gap between the promotional hype and the final product has undeniably left fans feeling slightly short-changed.
