F1 news: Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli admits that historic Italian GP victory at Monza ‘feels like a dream’
Kimi Antonelli made F1 history on Sunday, becoming the first Italian driver to win their home grand prix since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966.
Antonelli pulled off an incredible ride from 19th on the grid, having endured a pre-race engine penalty and a late battle with Mercedes team-mate George Russell.
Here, Sports News Blitz writer Luca Salmasi takes a closer look at Antonelli’s victory at Monza and his comments after an astonishing race.
‘An incredible day’
It was clear how much the victory meant to Antonelli as he battled his emotions on the cool-down lap, admitting to the team: “It feels like a dream. It’s a dream come true.
“What an incredible day. I couldn’t do this without my team, my family, and everyone who supports me.
“I did not expect this. Unbelievable, unbelievable. I am so happy.
“I could not have imagined being here, but we managed to pull it off and I am really, really happy.”
Happy but humble
Antonelli resisted the temptation to talk about the possibility of becoming the first Italian world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
Instead, the youngster remained humble and was adamant that there is still plenty that can happen before the end of the season.
“There are still a few races to go, so we will try to keep our heads down,” he explained.
“But now, yes, we are going to enjoy.”
Luck shines through
Late in the race, Antonelli was battling hard with Russell and, while attempting to overtake the Briton, found himself in the gravel.
“It was quite scary because the tarmac was breaking up, but I still thought I could make the corner,” Antonelli said.
“I went straight and I was thinking that maybe I had lost my chance.
“But luckily, we had the pace and I could bring it home.”
Believing in it
The 20-year-old added: “After the second restart, I was up there and I knew I could have a shot at the win.
“I definitely believed in it, especially when I was behind George.
“It was difficult to break away, with everyone being so strong.
“In the end, we pitted and he stayed out, but he struggled with his tyres.
“With fresher tyres, we were able to increase the pace and get the win.”
