F1 news: Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc address Ferrari chairman’s criticism

Ferrari Executive Chairman John Elkann stirred debate after the Brazilian Grand Prix by publicly suggesting that the team’s drivers need to “talk less and focus on driving.”

His comments followed a difficult weekend for the Scuderia, which saw both cars retire. Charles Leclerc was involved in a first-turn incident with Kimi Antonelli and Oscar Piastri, while Lewis Hamilton retired after sustaining damage in earlier collisions.

Elkann acknowledged the improvements made by Ferrari’s mechanics and engineers but stressed that the team still had room for growth elsewhere.

He noted that while the car and pit work were performing well, the drivers needed to demonstrate greater focus if Ferrari hoped to challenge for the Constructors’ Championship.

Hamilton’s composed response

Hamilton addressed the chairman’s remarks during a media session, reflecting both calm confidence and determination.

He emphasised that there is no culture of blame within Ferrari, highlighting shared responsibility across the team. “We’re all in the same boat. Ultimately, every single one of us has to take responsibility and accountability,” he explained.

The seven-time World Champion reaffirmed his belief in joining Ferrari at the start of the 2025 season. “I firmly believe in the decision I made to come here. I back my team 100%, and I back myself 100%,” Hamilton stated, adding that he feels stronger than ever despite a challenging season.

Leclerc stresses shared ambition

Leclerc also responded to Elkann’s comments, stressing that his conversations with the chairman reflect mutual honesty and shared ambition.

“John has known me for many years, and we speak to each other regularly,” the Monegasque said. “He wants the best for Ferrari, just like I do. That is the priority of the whole team, and we are doing everything we can to bring Ferrari back to the top.”

He acknowledged that the season has been challenging, particularly after a slow start, but insisted that difficulties have not affected his motivation.

“All seasons are challenging. Some are easier, some are harder. This one has been a bit more difficult, but that doesn’t hurt my motivation. I’m very driven to bring Ferrari back to the top,” Leclerc added.

Commitment to growth and resilience

Both drivers highlighted the personal and professional growth they have experienced this season.

Hamilton spoke about resilience and learning from challenges, noting that every setback has provided opportunities for growth. He praised the dedication of everyone in the Ferrari factory and on the track, saying that their consistent effort is the foundation for future success.

Leclerc echoed similar sentiments, expressing optimism about the long-term prospects of the team.

He stressed that while more needs to be done to fight for championships, the season has provided valuable lessons that will help the Scuderia improve in the coming years.

Eyes on the remaining races

Despite the setbacks, both Hamilton and Leclerc are determined to finish the season on a high note.

Hamilton emphasised the importance of momentum heading into the final rounds, while Leclerc focused on maintaining focus and dedication to the team’s objectives.

The duo’s united front sends a clear message that Ferrari’s drivers remain committed to rebuilding and striving for victory together.
