Fernando Alonso has caused a stir in the Formula 1 paddock after making some strong comments about the drivers towards the back of the grid.
The two-time world champion has stood by his criticism, despite receiving backlash from several fellow drivers.
The comments came after Alonso's collision with Williams driver Alex Albon during the United States Grand Prix in Austin, writes Sports News Blitz’s Elliot Desage.
The incident left Alonso's Aston Martin with damage and led to questions about the standard of driving further down the grid.
Speaking after the race, Alonso did not hold back, telling the press and Sky Sports: "The quality of the drivers in the lower third of the grid is very low, as we saw today with Alex."
His comments quickly became a talking point, with many questioning whether the Spaniard had been too harsh in his judgement.
Alonso stands by his comments
Rather than taking back what he said, Alonso continued to defend his opinion when questioned ahead of the Mexico City Grand Prix.
The 44-year-old suggested that his comments were not aimed at every driver towards the back of the grid, but believed there were certain individuals who would know exactly who he was referring to.
"I think we all know which ones we are talking about and which ones felt targeted by that comment," Alonso said.
He also explained that his experience in Formula 1 has allowed him to recognise mistakes that might not always be obvious to people watching from the outside.
"I see things from the car that I cannot tell you," he added.
Alonso's comments show his frustration with what he believes are unnecessary mistakes being made during races, particularly when drivers are fighting for positions further down the order.
Fellow drivers disagree with Alonso
Unsurprisingly, Alonso's comments did not go down particularly well with everyone in the paddock.
Albon was quick to defend himself, disagreeing with the suggestion that the standard of driving towards the back of the grid was poor.
"I think the grid's the strongest it's been for a while," Albon said.
The Williams driver also pointed out that Formula 1 is more competitive than it has been in previous years, with fewer opportunities for drivers who are not performing at a high level.
Pierre Gasly also disagreed with Alonso's assessment, suggesting that the current grid is one of the strongest he has experienced.
Meanwhile, Oliver Bearman described the Spaniard's comments as "slightly harsh", highlighting how difficult it can be for younger drivers to establish themselves in such a competitive sport.
Their responses suggest that not everyone shares Alonso's view, with many believing that the standard across the grid is higher than ever.
Is Alonso right about the lower grid?
Another interesting part of Alonso's argument involved Formula 1's cost cap.
He questioned whether teams can afford to keep repairing cars following unnecessary incidents, especially when smaller teams already have limited budgets.
There is an argument that drivers need to be more careful when fighting for positions, as even minor mistakes can cost teams valuable money and points.
However, it is also important to remember that drivers towards the back of the grid are often fighting just as hard as those at the front.
For younger drivers especially, every opportunity to impress can be important for their future in the sport.
A debate that is not going away
Alonso's comments have certainly created an interesting debate within Formula 1.
While his experience and success mean his opinion carries plenty of weight, the responses from Albon, Gasly and Bearman show that his views are not universally shared.
Whether Alonso has a fair point or has simply been too critical remains open to debate.
One thing is certain: with competition across the grid continuing to increase, the standard of driving will remain a major talking point throughout the season.
