Wrestling news: CM Punk the best choice for World Heavyweight Champion as WWE seeks spark

At the most recent Saturday Night’s Main Event, the WWE finally crowned a new World Heavyweight Champion after the incumbent Seth Rollins vacated his title due to injury.

CM Punk re-captured the belt he lost two months ago at SummerSlam when he hit the GTS (Go to Sleep) on “Main Event” Jey Uso and now moves forward as world champ on Monday Night Raw.

Here, Sports News Blitz writer Mosaddek Abu explains why this was the right move for WWE.

Reinvigorating a tired brand

Punk winning back the title was the best choice WWE could have made as someone like Punk will not only draw more eyes to the show, but also bring a new level of excitement.

Plus, with a spotlight as big as his, he will be able to elevate talent that is under the radar.

There is also no denying that the World Title picture on Raw had become stagnant due to many of the same stars being given an opportunity time and time again.

So when Punk did that first promo, Monday Night on Raw, and name-dropped people such as Finn Balor, Sheamus, AJ Styles, Bron Breakker, Bronson Reed, Dominik Mysterio, and JD McDonagh while teasing one final match with John Cena, he immediately created excitement and intrigue for fans who are familiar with the quality of those individuals.

At his best, Punk will force others to elevate themselves to the next level – just look at what he did with Drew McIntyre for most of 2024 or the rivalry he had with Cena which forced the latter to improve his in-ring craft and expand his promo range.

Ultimately, there are some talented names on the WWE roster who simply aren't being featured enough on a weekly basis, and getting them to work with Punk will benefit them in the short term and possibly help make them a mainstay on the World Title scene.

And by all accounts, the World Championship has not had the same excitement since Triple H reintroduced it back in 2023 and Rollins had that incredible first run.

It’s therefore safe to say that, with Punk at the helm, we are about to embark on a journey that will please all wrestling fans.
