WATCH: Youssef Chermiti’s overhead kick is one of the Old Firm's greatest ever
Rangers number nine Youssef Chermiti certainly didn't feel like a slow start when he hammered home a career-defining strike to give Rangers an early lead over bitter rivals Celtic.
The 21-year old hasn’t been with The Teddy Bears for long, but he is quickly becoming a cult hero, continuously popping up when it matters most, writes Sports News Blitz’s Sam Condy.
But this is more than just a great goal; both Glasgow clubs are trailing Hearts of Midlothian FC in the Scottish league standings, and a win almost felt like a necessity for either club to stay close to Derek McInnes’s side.
After a fast start from Rangers, a goal seemed inevitable. The Hoops were on the back foot, and tension was building at Ibrox.
In the seventh minute, a looping cross from Andreas Skov Olsen sent the ball right into the danger zone.
The ball connected with the right boot of Chermiti, whose acrobatic effort slipped past Hoops keeper, Viljami Sinisalo, sending Ibrox into a state of frenzy.
He's now in Old Firm folklore, with his effort alongside Henrik Larsson’s legendary chip, and Shunsuke Nakamura’s long-distance screamer as one of the Glasgow Derby’s best-ever goals.
The Portuguese prospects fun didn't stop there, just 16 minutes later, Chermiti found himself on the scoresheet yet again, a moment of magic inside the penalty area bested Celtic's Julian Araujo, and a backheel saw Chermiti bag his second of the day – less spectacularly but every bit as impressive.
Fortunately for the green side of Glasgow, Celtic enjoyed a better second half. Kieran Tierney snatched one back early into the second stanza, heading the ball past Jack Butland to keep the Celts' hopes alive.
Then, in true Old Firm fashion, a 90th-minute penalty saw Celtic’s title hopes hanging in the balance.
Butland saved Daizen Maeda’s effort, but the rebound slipped out of his grasp, as Reo Hatate hammered home the equaliser.
A draw means both sides are still in the title race – just – but their job is becoming harder.
Hearts now sit six points clear as they continue their historic title charge.
