UEFA Women’s Euro news: Analysing the Lionesses’ disappointing performance against France

In the post-match interview after the loss to France, Sarina Wiegman described England’s first performance in the Women’s Euro 2025 the best, saying: “We were too sloppy.”

Even before England scored a disallowed goal in the 15th minute, there were signs that the Lionesses were not playing to the high standards they’ve set for themselves.

Here, Sports News Blitz writer Vanely Barumire analyses the Lionesses’ loss against France.

Overall review

Considering the misplaced passes, the giving away of sloppy free kicks in dangerous areas and the lack of chances converted — the Lionesses did not look confident on attack or defence in this game.

France were outperforming the former champions and while Lauren James proved to be a threat down the middle — the same could not be said for the Lionesses’ back line.

France’s attacking prowess came from Sakina Karchaoui, with the Paris Saint-Germain player proving to be a constant headache for England’s defence.

The link-up between her and fellow PSG teammate, Élisa De Almeida, proved a dangerous one, and in moments — added to the woes of England’s back line.

France’s first goal summarised the night for England—one full of sloppy mistakes capitalised on by Les Bleues.

Initially, England dealt with the French attacking threat well, but after one too many ill-timed passes, France took charge of the game.

A combination of pressure from France and miscommunication from the Lionesses led to England losing their opening game.

Nothing can be taken away from the French women. Les Bleues played some great football.

Sandy Baltimore’s goal was a masterclass in French football - brilliant ball control and great finishing, with a little finesse.

Les Bleues simply outplayed England throughout the game and were a treat to watch for non-English fans.

Predictions going forward

Do I think this game will be an indicator for the rest of the Lionesses’ group-stage games?

Hopefully not.

Despite a disappointing start to the tournament, England are packed with talented young stars like James and Hannah Hampton—who seasoned veterans like Leah Williamson and Lucy Bronze help nurture.

This will definitely come in handy in the next three games, even with their group being a difficult one.

This weekend's game taught us one thing - France poses a real challenge to England's potential Euro-winning double.

Additionally, Spain’s six-goal demolition over Belgium thoroughly places the current World Cup holders in the race for a Euro triumph.

The Lionesses need to revive their roar if they are to achieve back-to-back Euro-winning status.

Could the Lionesses defend their title? We’ll have to wait and see.
