Tributes flood in for Liverpool forward Diogo Jota after tragic passing
Tributes have been flooding in since the news of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva’s tragic passing from a car accident on Thursday, July 3.
Jota’s wife, Rute, and their three children remain to cherish his memory.
The two were newlyweds, having tied the knot just two weeks prior to the accident.
Sports News Blitz’s Aidan Leo shares his thoughts and condolences on the heartbreaking and sudden passing of the Portuguese and Anfield favourite.
Thoughts of a Liverpool legend on the passing
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher offered his thoughts on the tragic passing.
“I cannot believe it, it’s so sad and devastating for his family, his wife and three wonderful children,” he told Sky Sports News.
“He lived really close to us but kept himself to himself. He came across as very quiet and humble, a real family man. He seemed like a great guy and of course a great footballer.
“It’s difficult to find the words to say. It’s not really about the football and Liverpool right now, but about his family and three lovely kids.
“The whole of football comes together in situations like this. The summer he’s had, he’s just won the Premier League with Liverpool, the Nations League with Portugal and got married two weeks ago.
“It just shows us all how quickly life can change, you can’t even comprehend it.
“It makes us all take a step back and look at how important things really are, maybe football itself. We get passionate and heated about the game, myself included, but this makes you think, ‘Why? What for?’”
Tributes flood in from players
Plenty of footballers Jota played with and against are in a state of mourning and have been paying tribute with love and support for the Portuguese star and his family.
His Liverpool team-mate Darwin Núñez posted on Instagram, saying: “There are no words of comfort for so much pain.
“I will always remember you with your smile, like a true companion on and off the field. From where he is, I am sure he is always with you, especially his wife and three children.
“May Diogo and André rest in peace.”
Ex-Wolves team-mate Raúl Jiménez remembers Jota as an excellent team-mate, friend, and father.
“It’s difficult to receive this kind of news and I still can’t believe it.
“An excellent team-mate, friend and, above all, a great father. Thanks for everything my friend, we will always remember you. A hug to the sky. RIP,” Jiménez said in an Instagram tribute.
The two became known for their dynamic partnership up front for the Old Gold – a connection that helped earn Jota his move to Anfield in 2020.
With a Premier League title, an FA Cup, and two League Cups to his name, alongside 65 goals in 182 appearances for the Reds, his legacy is firmly established.
One of the all-time footballing icons, Cristiano Ronaldo, who played with Jota in the Portugal national team, said on Instagram: “It doesn’t make sense. We were just together in the national team, you had just got married.
“To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world.
“I know you will always be with them. Rest in Peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you.”
Jota is a two-time Nations League winner with Portugal, the national team for which he made 49 senior appearances, registering 14 goals and 12 assists.
“There must be a bigger purpose,” says Jurgen Klopp
Iconic former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who coached Jota throughout his tenure at Liverpool, says that he is “heartbroken” and struggling to come to terms with the loss of his former player.
“This is a moment where I struggle! There must be a bigger purpose! But I can’t see it!” Klopp said.
“I’m heartbroken to hear about the passing of Diogo and his brother André.
“Diogo was not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father! We will miss you so much!
“All my prayers, thoughts and power to Rute, the kids, the family, the friends and everyone who loved them!
“Rest in peace – Love, J.”
The two won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup in their time together at the club.
