Super League rivals round analysis: What did results tell us for how the season will progress?

St Helens completed an incredible six-minute comeback, Wakefield now hold the bragging rights after defeating Castleford, while Hull KR came out on top in the Hull derby.

The first rivals round this year did not disappoint as the first bragging rights were given to local rivals, we had upsets, late drama and vital points at the top and the bottom of the table.

This weekend will have made teams and broken teams - the confidence from winning these rivals round games are crucial, while the teams on the losing side this round could be damaged in the upcoming weeks.

Here, Sports News Blitz writer Elliot Ward looks at the results from this weekend's action, how this shapes the table up, the crucial try scorers and the overall performance from the teams involved.

Hull KR vs Hull FC

Not much separated the two sides going into half-time, with Hull KR gaining a 10-6 lead going into the break.

The game still had all to play for as both teams came out for the second half.

However, Hull KR came out with more grit and determination, keeping Hull FC to a try-less second half, winning the game 24-6.

St Helens vs Wigan Warriors

The game started lively with Wigan scoring in the opening seven minutes, thanks to Harry Smith going over, adding the first points of the game.

It was not long until St Helens replied with their first try of the game in the 15th minute - the scoring did not stop there as another try apiece was added to the scoreline before half-time.

Going in at the break, Wigan led 12-10.

Wigan then added two more tries and two more conversions, making the score 24-10 in the 68th minute.

With a three-try lead, Wigan looked home and dry heading into the last 10 minutes of the game.

However, an incredible comeback to topple the league leaders, St Helens scored four tries in the last eight minutes thanks to a fantastic Leyland double to secure the victory with the final score being 34-24 to St Helens.

Bradford Bulls vs Leeds Rhinos

No surprises as Leeds Rhinos showed how good they are, coming from behind to defeat Bradford Bulls 24-12 at Odsal.

With Bradford going into the break with an 8-6 lead, the Leeds Rhinos claimed top spot after a convincing second-half performance to hand Bradford their first loss at home this season.

Huddersfield Giants vs York Knights

Huddersfield took their form from last week's win against Wigan Warriors into this game and defeated York Knights 34-14 in a high-scoring affair, propelling Huddersfield off the bottom spot in the league.

Warrington vs Leigh Leopards

Warrington came into the game in great form, and this continued as they beat Leigh 42-6.

An incredible showing from Warrington - sadly for Leigh, their dross form continues due to many first-team injuries.

Catalans Dragons vs Toulouse Olympique

Catalans get the bragging rights as they beat French rivals Toulouse in a very tight game, ending 33-26.

Toulouse didn’t have enough to beat the Dragons - Toulouse’s centre Mathieu Jussaume will feel hard done by being on the losing side after he scored a brilliant hat-trick.

Castleford Tigers vs Wakefield Trinity

Ending off this weekend's rivals round's action, it was Castleford Tigers who took on Wakefield Trinity at the OneBore Stadium.

Wakefield started quickly, with Jake Trueman finding a way through the Castleford Defence inside the fifth minute.

It did not stop there as the tries kept coming for Trinity as they went in at half time with a 16-0 lead.

Castleford needed to come out quickly in the second half, but unfortunately, they couldn’t get past the Wakefield defensive line.

Wakefield kept pushing through and scored another three tries, including two from young winger Oliver Pratt.

The game finished 34-0 to Trinity, meaning Trinity go joint second while Castleford drop to the bottom of the league.
