Soccer news: Xavi Simons eyes shock exit as Barcelona return rumours emerge

Xavi Simons could be set for a summer move away from Tottenham Hotspur, with reports suggesting the Dutchman is open to leaving after just one season in North London, with Barcelona keeping tabs on the midfielder.

Here, Sports News Blitz writer Tyler Cooke assesses where Simons’ future may lie.

Premier League struggles

Simons only joined Spurs in the summer of 2025 from RB Leipzig in a deal worth over £50million, arriving with high expectations after impressing in the Bundesliga.

However, his time in the Premier League has been inconsistent, with the 22-year-old struggling to replicate his previous form and registering limited goal contributions across the campaign.

Despite flashes of brilliance, including a standout Champions League performance where he scored twice, Simons has found it difficult to maintain consistency in a Tottenham side that is having a horrendous season.

The club currently finds itself battling near the relegation zone, and uncertainty surrounding their future has led to speculation that several key players could seek exits this summer.

Barcelona return on the cards?

A return to Barcelona would represent a full-circle moment for Simons, who previously spent time in the club’s academy before moving to Paris Saint-Germain as a youngster.

While no formal bid has yet been confirmed, the idea of a return to Spain could be appealing for the Dutch international, particularly given his technical style and familiarity with Barcelona’s philosophy.

Spurs facing a difficult decision

For Tottenham, losing Simons so soon after his arrival would raise serious questions about their recruitment strategy.

The club invested heavily in the midfielder, tying him down to a long-term contract, but poor performances and the threat of relegation could force their hand.

Should Spurs drop into the Championship, it is widely expected that Simons will push for an exit, with multiple European clubs monitoring his situation closely as well as Barcelona.
