Rugby league round-up: Warrington Wolves maul Castleford Tigers as Leeds Rhinos lose again
This weekend of Super League action had it all, with upsets, huge scorelines, and some expected results making it a great advert for the neutral, writes Sports News Blitz’s Elliot Ward.
Wigan Warriors extended their good form by beating York Knights, with Warrington Wolves keeping pace at the top of the table courtesy of a demolition job against Castleford Tigers.
Elsewhere, the struggles of Huddersfield Giants and Leigh Leopards continued as they came up short away from home.
Wigan set the tone with tight win
Kicking off the weekend’s action on Thursday night, Wigan were close victors as they edged out York 23-22 thanks to a 71st-minute drop goal from Smith, which sealed two points for the Warriors and sent them top of the league.
On Friday night, we saw no surprises as Huddersfield lost 26-14 to the Bradford Bulls.
After five games, the Giants are yet to put a point on the board and are cemented in last place.
Continuing down the no-surprises route, St Helens beat Toulouse 30-16 in France after an amazing first half where we saw all five St Helens tries inside the first 29 minutes of the game.
That severely damaged Toulouse’s hopes of winning, and they subsequently only managed to score 16 points in the second half.
Rounding off the Friday action, Wakefield Trinity put a weakened Leopards side to the sword, defeating them 18-14 to push up into the top six.
Wakefield did have to survive a late push from Leigh, but their defence held strong to secure the victory.
Pre-season favourites Leeds falter once again
Moving on to Saturday, Warrington destroyed Castleford 72-6.
This is the biggest scoreline of the season so far and a pretty embarrassing afternoon for the Tigers – definitely not the result the travelling fans were hoping for.
Another shock in round five saw Hull KR defeated yet again this season, and this time it was the turn of Catalan Dragons with a scoreline of 26-20.
It was all thanks to a late try in the 79th minute by Catalans player Lenny Marc, who went over in the corner to earn his side two points.
To round the weekend off, fans were treated to another upset as Hull FC toppled Leeds Rhinos 24-16.
Many rugby league fans thought the Rhinos would win the league, but two losses in two weeks has things looking a little different already.
