Premier League news: Winners and losers from Matchday 22 as Man City beaten, Arsenal frustrated

Manchester United provided a huge upset in the Manchester derby while Arsenal and Aston Villa failed to capitalise on dropped points elsewhere during an action-packed weekend.

Here, Sports News Blitz writer Eloise Stevens breaks down the winners and losers from Premier League Matchday 22.

Winner: Manchester United

United were the ultimate winners in the Manchester derby, storming to a 2-0 victory over Manchester City thanks to goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu.

New interim manager Michael Carrick thus started as he meant to go on, securing a win in his first match in charge and against United’s biggest rivals no less.

A major factor in the success at Old Trafford was the contribution of the hosts’ more experienced players.

Indeed, Carrick admitted it was a “calculated gamble” to play Harry Maguire for the full 90 minutes, but the bold decision paid off.

The result briefly lifted the Red Devils up to fourth place – something they failed to achieve regularly under Ruben Amorim.

Loser: Manchester City

Manchester City had Gianluigi Donnarumma to thank for keeping them in the game, with the Italian producing a string of superb saves to prevent the scoreline from becoming an embarrassment.

However, he was powerless to stop strikes from Mbeumo and Dorgu as United eventually made their dominance count after having three goals disallowed.

City, who are now without a Premier League win in four matches, never looked like mounting a comeback.

Erling Haaland’s struggles also continued as he extended his run to just one goal in seven games.

With Arsenal picking up only a point against Nottingham Forest, City once again failed to close the gap in the title race, leaving the Gunners seven points clear at the top.

Winner: West Ham

West Ham proved they are still worthy of their Premier League status with a gutsy victory over Tottenham.

Despite a strong first-half performance against a below-par Spurs side, the Hammers had to wait until injury time to secure all three points, with Callum Wilson striking in the 93rd minute.

Crysencio Summerville opened the scoring, celebrating his goal alongside manager Nuno Espírito Santo, who has been under immense pressure since taking charge.

The only disappointment for West Ham was their inability to make up more ground in the table, with Leeds’ win and Forest’s stalemate against Arsenal limiting their progress.

Loser: Arsenal

Arsenal were somewhat rescued by the poor performances of their closest rivals as a draw with Nottingham Forest still left them seven points clear at the top.

Nevertheless, the Gunners would have left the City Ground frustrated after failing to capitalise on dropped points for the second league match in a row.

Following last week’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool, it marked the first time in 14 years that Arsenal recorded consecutive goalless draws in the top flight.

Mikel Arteta, in particular, felt his side were hard done by after being denied a penalty for a handball by Forest defender Ola Aina.

Winner: Chelsea

Liam Rosenior claimed his first Premier League win as Chelsea head coach when the Blues defeated Brentford 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.

João Pedro’s first-half strike followed by a Cole Palmer penalty after the break gave Rosenior his second win in three matches in charge.

However, it was far from a comfortable victory, with Brentford registering more possession and shots on target than the hosts.

Rosenior will now be looking for his third win as Chelsea face Pafos in the Champions League on Wednesday – his third ‘competition debut’ in just his fourth game at the helm.

Loser: Aston Villa

Aston Villa missed the chance to move above Man City after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Everton at Villa Park.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez will shoulder some of the blame for the decisive goal as his clumsy attempt at a routine save gifted the ball to Thierno Barry, who finished into an empty net.

However, Villa’s lacklustre display throughout the match showed little real desire to claim victory, leaving them appearing resigned to their fate.
