Premier League news: Super-sub Buendia rescues Aston Villa as lacklustre Tottenham falter at home

Super-sub Emi Buendía helped Aston Villa stage a comeback 2-1 victory over a lacklustre Tottenham side in London on Sunday.

Here, Sports News Blitz writer Harrison Pearce takes a look at the visitors’ two difference-makers in securing what could prove to be a crucial three points.

Rogers looks reborn

It is well known that Morgan Rogers endured a quiet start to the season.

The England midfielder’s passing was off from day one while his signature driving into the box simply wasn’t as effective.

However, beginning with the Burnley game just before the international break, Rogers seems to finally be clicking into gear.

During his recent spell with the national team, he scored against Wales at Wembley and was really impressive across two games.

Yet, facing Tottenham was always going to be a difficult task, and Villa duly went 1-0 down through a Bentancur goal five minutes into the game.

However, in the 38th minute, Rogers scored an equaliser which dipped straight past Viarcio.

It was a strike reminiscent of Gareth Bale in his prime, with Rogers topping it off by copying Thierry Henry’s iconic corner flag celebration.

Buendía’s signature strike

Villa’s Argentinian midfielder has scored two important goals this season to help his side win a game.

The first came against Feyenoord in the Europa League, with the second arriving on Sunday at Spurs.

In a match that looked destined for a draw, Buendía pulled a superb finish out of nowhere, making Matty Cash’s earlier technical delivery into Lucas Digne’s path that much sweeter.

There is now definitely an argument to be made that the 27-year-old should be starting for Aston Villa.

Unai Emery’s side are only one place off the top half of the Premier League in 11th.

And with the gap to Chelsea in fifth only two points, the Spaniard has done a great job of turning the claret and blue ship around in recent weeks.
