Norway edge Switzerland in tense Women’s Euro 2025 opener

Norway opened their Women’s Euro 2025 campaign with a hard-fought 2–1 win over hosts Switzerland, delivering an early statement of intent at a packed St. Jakob-Park in Basel.

Switzerland struck first in front of an electrified home crowd. Nadine Riesen fired them into the lead after 27 minutes, starting the hosts off well.

Norway responded in the second half, Ada Hegerberg levelling the score in the 53rd minute. The Lyon forward showed her class with a composed header that silenced the Swiss faithful - her 50th international goal.

And while she squandered a chance to give her side the lead later on - missing a penalty just before the whistle - her influence remained pivotal throughout.

Late pressure tells

Switzerland’s resistance cracked under pressure when a defensive lapse saw an own goal gift Norway the winner.

Despite the loss, Switzerland showed enough to believe they’re still in this, especially in the first half.

But against a team with Norway’s pedigree and players like Hegerberg leading the line, the smallest margins proved decisive.

For Norway, it’s the perfect start - a win over the hosts, three points on the board, and a reminder to the rest of Europe that they’re not here to make up the numbers.

For Switzerland, the road gets steeper, but their tournament is far from over.
