NFL news: Buffalo Bills, Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars chase maiden Super Bowl glory

History could be made in San Francisco come February, with there a good chance that we will see a first-time Super Bowl winner.

The short-price favourites to win one of sport’s biggest prizes are the Los Angeles Rams, who are just 7/2 to recapture the Vince Lombardi Trophy, having triumphed in 1999 and 2021.

However, of the most fancied teams – the first 10 in the betting – three have never won the Super Bowl before.

Here, Sports News Blitz writer Graeme Bailey takes a look at the trio of franchises eyeing up a maiden crown.

Potential first-time winners

The first of those are second favourites the Buffalo Bills – famous for being the only side to lose four successive Super Bowls, doing so from 1991 to 1994.

They are currently favourites to win the AFC.

Led by Josh Allen, who is second favourite for the MVP award behind the Rams’ Matthew Stafford, the Bills are currently not even winning their division, the AFC East, as they sit at 10 and 3, one game adrift of the New England Patriots.

The Bills are still favoured to win the East, though, which will get them into the play-offs, but they are unlikely to get a home game if they make the conference finals as the Denver Broncos are on course for that honour.

Yet, despite the Broncos likely finishing as first seed in the AFC, bookmakers believe that it is the Bills who will meet the Rams in San Francisco next February.

As it stands, Buffalo are just 8/1 to win the Lombardi for the first time in their history.

Indeed, it would be all the more historical given this is their last year at their current Highmark Stadium home.

The other two fancied sides who have never won the Super Bowl before are the Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Texans and Jaguars are also two of only four sides in NFL history to have never made the Super Bowl itself – the others being the Detroit Lions and Cleveland Browns.

Houston and Jacksonville are currently competing to win the AFC South, with the second-placed Texans priced more favourably at 16/1 to take a maiden Super Bowl crown.

Jacksonville, who are one game better off than their rivals at 10 and 4 for the season, are best priced at 16/1 to win the big prize for the first time in their history.
