Liam Delap: Chelsea’s £30 million No. 9 hits the ground running in Club World Cup

Liam Delap’s Chelsea debut this June felt less like a cautious introduction and more like a statement of intent.

The 22-year-old striker, fresh from a £30 million move from Ipswich Town, didn’t merely step onto the pitch - he made waves at the Club World Cup group stage.

From bench spark to back-of-the-net

In the opener against LAFC on June 16 in Atlanta, Delap came off the bench with that familiar hunger and instinctual timing.

Not wasting any time, he threaded the assist to Enzo Fernandez that broke the deadlock, enabling Chelsea’s eventual 2-0 victory.

Then, against ES Tunis, Fernandez returned the favour. With an assist from the Argentine, Delap delivered his first goal in royal blue - precise, assured, bold, and decisive - sealing a 3-0 win that clinched their spot in the knockout rounds.

With his first finish for the club, Delap didn’t just open his account. He opened a conversation about what Chelsea’s No. 9 could become.

“We knew we had to win tonight to get through, and we’re pleased to get the job done,’ Delap said.

“It’s a really happy feeling [to score] and hopefully it’s the first of many. I love playing football and to play for such a good team is a great feeling.”

“I spoke to Enzo [Fernandez] and he told me that when he gets the ball that I should run, and it was a great pass, and luckily it went in.”

Competition and chemistry

Chelsea’s strike partnership is suddenly deeper - and sharper. Delap’s arrival puts him alongside Nicolas Jackson, a £30 million signing in his own right.

Enzo Maresca seems keen to keep both involved: “Having both Jackson and Delap is a nice feeling,” he said earlier on in the tournament.

The competition might be just what Chelsea need, as with Jackson sidelined by suspension in the ES Tunis game, Delap seized his chance - and didn’t let go.

Will Delap retain the starting spot, or will Maresca adapt his tactics to suit two strikers?
