ITV horse racing tips and best bets for Newmarket, Goodwood and Thirsk on Saturday, August 1

It’s the final day of the Goodwood Festival and Sports News Blitz’s racing expert Jeff Mexico has completed his gallon-a-day Pimms challenge and is ready to vomit up some more cracking tips.

ITV have five races from the West Sussex course, including the feature cavalry charge that’s the Stewards’ Cup.

They’ve also snuck in the Summer Handicap from Goodwood and Summer Cup from Thirsk, so the northerners don’t miss out.

Jeff Mexico’s racing tips

We are at the fag end of this year’s Glorious Goodwood and those linen-suited berks who have been at the course this week can hang up their Panama hat until next July.

It got me thinking – what type of person actually wears a Panama hat regularly? It is certainly not an item that you’ll find on a Manchester sink estate.

South American drug dealers are top of the list as it’s a job that involves a lot of sweating in white suits and the hat tops off the look.

Then there’s the Man from Del Monte, a chap who spent his life pushing tinned pineapples while occasionally dropping in on Epstein’s island on the way home.

Now, don’t think I just make broad ill-judged statements about people. It all comes from solid knowledge, and with this in mind Ecuadorians are next on the list. The Panama hat is actually from Ecuador, not Panama, so stick that in your Peruvian pan pipe.

Finally, the large sub-set of people … the British twat. They’ll probably complete the outfit with a light-coloured blazer and a pair of red chinos. They also know at least two people called Binky.

13:33 (Newmarket) – EBF Chalice Stakes (Listed)

Win tip: Revoir

Has been running consistently well in stronger company and knocking on the door. Looks proven at this sort of middle-distance trip and can cope with a sound surface.

Each-way tip: Gone By

Recent figures show a progressive mare arriving here in excellent heart. This is a step up in class, but progressive stayers often bridge that gap and she shouldn’t have to do much to get in the frame.

13:50 (Goodwood) – Coral Summer Handicap

Win tip: Aeronautic

Has slipped to a workable mark after competing in stronger staying handicaps earlier in the season. His best performances have come over 1m6f on quick ground, and Goodwood’s fast surface should suit.

Each-way tip: Incensed

Racing from the foot of the handicap gives her every chance if she can reproduce her better efforts. Recent figures don’t leap off the page, but she’s been contesting competitive races and has shaped better than form suggests. Well drawn in stall two and should outrun her price.

14:08 (Thirsk) – William Hill Summer Cup (Handicap)

Win tip: Northern Express

Course-and-distance winner and arrives after returning to winning form on his latest start. A mark of 97 still looks workable and offers plenty of value.

Each-way tip: Pure Legend

Relatively unexposed in this grade and has shaped as though a race like this is within reach. Step up to nearly a mile should suit his running style better than a sharp 7f.

14:25 (Goodwood) – Highclere Castle Glorious Stakes (Group 3)

Main tip: Ghostwriter

Consistently competed at Group 1 and Group 2 level, and this represents a slight drop in grade. Has shown plenty of ability around 1m2f, but this step up to almost 1m4f looks likely to suit his strong-finishing style. Should offer an attractive price if you strike early enough.

Each-way tip: King’s Gambit

Highly regarded and has shown flashes of smart ability without quite fulfilling his potential. Return to 1m4f on quick ground looks a positive.

15:00 (Goodwood) – Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes (Group 2)

Main tip: Danielle

Smallish field so just selecting one here and it’s Danielle that catches the eye. Much like a Danielle I met in Bagley’s in 1992 … until I found out she was actually a Daniel. One of the more interesting baths I’ve taken. Anyway…

Has steadily improved this season and still looks to have more upside than some of her rivals. Step up to 1m6f should play to her strengths. She has already shown she belongs at Pattern level and this doesn’t look an exceptionally deep Group 2.

15:35 (Goodwood) – Coral Stewards Cup (Handicap)

Win tip: Two Tribes

At his best when there’s a strong early gallop, and with lots of runners in this race there should be no shortage of pace. Has already shown he can be highly competitive in major sprint handicaps and has the tactical speed to hold a good position before finishing strongly. Good to firm conditions suit him well, and draw gives him options.

Each-way tip: Soldiers Tree

Recent form figures show he’s been running to a high level all season without getting the rub of the green. Looks capable of another career-best and Mason Paetel’s 5 lb claim could prove significant.

16:10 (Goodwood) – Phase Eight Handicap

Win tip: Ghost Mode

Looked on an upward curve this season and still appears to have scope from his current handicap mark. His strongest performances have come on quick ground, and Goodwood should be ideal.

Each-way tip: Egoli

Unexposed at the trip and well handicapped. Yard has an excellent record of placing progressive three-year-olds in valuable handicaps.
