Golf betting tips: Rocket Classic – Cameron Young to score low as Matt Fitzpatrick chases FedEx spot

The PGA Tour heads to Michigan this week for the Rocket Classic, where some normally overlooked names will be vying for a coveted win in an otherwise weak field.

Hosted at Detroit Golf Club, proceedings are set to favour accuracy off the tee over distance, with there an abundance of short par 4s and reachable par 5s on a short-yardage course.

Ultimately, those who can consistently place themselves in advantageous positions will thrive.

Here, Sports News Blitz/Travel News Blitz writer Sam Condy breaks down four of his favourite bets ahead of the action.

Cameron Young

Backing Cameron Young hasn’t looked overly appealing recently, but this might be the right week to get on board.

After all, the field is far weaker than usual and his form is trending in the right direction.

Add in the fact that Detroit Golf Club suits his game perfectly, and the stars are aligned for the American to score low.

Over the past seven weeks, Young has made every cut and posted three top 10s, including at the US Open, so his form certainly bodes well ahead of the trip to Michigan.

While he can be unpredictable at times, his game is clearly on the up, and now looks like the right time to get behind the 28-year-old.

Matt Fitzpatrick

It’s safe to say that Matt Fitzpatrick’s season hasn’t gone to plan.

He currently sits 74th in the FedEx Cup rankings and, with just eight events left until the play-offs, a massive performance is needed.

However, over the last two events, shades of the old Fitzpatrick have been shining through.

At the Travelers Championship, in particular, his game looked sharp across the board as he ranked sixth in Distance, 12th in Accuracy, second in Total Driving, and first in Ball Striking.

His putting – which is normally a strength – had been letting him down for a while, but it is finally beginning to improve week by week.

In the end, though, regardless of all the struggles and tentative improvements, backing a former major winner to put on a show when it matters is rarely a bad decision.

Chris Kirk

For Chris Kirk, there was no better way to build confidence than a good showing at the US Open.

When a course is that hard, outperforming golfing elites is sure to put a pep in your step.

He has also performed well at this event in the past, finishing within the top 25 in four of his five appearances at Detroit Golf Club as he has got to know the course well.

With the American riding a hot streak right now, getting behind him this week is one of the more tempting picks, especially considering the odds on offer.

Davis Thompson

Davis Thompson had a solid tournament last time out, finishing 25th and ranking third in SG: Approach.

And with all signs pointing to a return to form, it is worth remembering that his success spiked this time last year as he won the John Deere and carded a T9 at the US Open.

He may not be a big name at the end of the day, but the field is thin this week and Thompson has a history of strong performances during these mid-summer months.
