Golf betting tips: Patrick Cantlay hoping to ignite Ryder Cup ascension in Philadelphia

A week out from 2025’s second major, the Truist Championship will prove to be the perfect warm-up ahead of the PGA Championship.

Scheffler recorded his first win of the year at last week’s Byron Nelson, putting on a stellar display and reminding the world why he is number one.

The tournament moves from Quail Hollow, with its usual home gearing up to host the PGA Championship.

Instead, the tournament heads to Philadelphia’s Cricket Club, a short par-70 challenge that rewards those not scared to take risks with their iron play.

Proximity to the hole will be a deciding factor this week.

Additionally, strategic play is a must. Wayward tee-shots, while not out-of-bounds, will leave little room for attacking the well-guarded greens.

Players who can consistently pick the smart shot will find themselves leading the pack by Sunday.

Here, Sports News Blitz’s golf betting tipster Sam Condy picks out four of the best picks ahead of the PGA’s trip to Philly.

Patrick Cantlay

Patrick Cantlay will revel in the move to Bentgrass greens this week. Five of his seven PGA Tour wins have come on Bentgrass surfaces, while a sixth took place on a Bentgrass/ Poa Annua mix.

Throw in his desperation for a win, and we could see Cantlay really turn up the heat this week.

Cantlay currently sits 11th in the Ryder Cup standings, and a tour victory is almost necessary if he wants to put himself in the fight for a Team America call-up.

Jordan Spieth

Spieth looks like he may be beginning to find some form. Some fantastic weekend golf at the Byron Nelson hinted at a return to glory for the three-time major winner.

With Scottie Scheffler absent this week, there is a real opportunity for the Texan to kickstart his season, and begin a long - but not impossible - climb back up the Ryder Cup rankings.

Jason Day

Day thrives on A.W. Tillinghast courses, having placed second at the 2016 PGA Championship at Baltusrol, and second and fifth at the 2014 and 2010 Barclays, both held at Ridgewood.

He also added a fourth-place finish to his resume at the 2016 Barclays, held at Bethpage Black.

Additionally, Day is simply playing consistently good golf, with two top-10 finishes in his last four, including eighth at The Masters.

He may be past his best, but as Justin Rose showcased at Augusta, you can never count out a former world number one. 50/1 is simply too good a deal to pass up on.

Colin Morikawa

Philadelphia’s Cricket Club isn’t an overly long course, so accuracy should be favoured over power this week.

With that in mind, there is nobody on tour more accurate with their irons than Colin Morikawa.

The ball-striking specialist is still chasing a win to end his lengthy drought, but having just paired up with a new caddy, the American will be hoping to come into this week rejuvenated and ready to roll.
