Georgia Stanway reveals Lionesses are helping fund family travel for Euro 2025
As England gear up to defend their European crown in Switzerland, key members of the squad have revealed they’re dipping into their own pockets to ensure loved ones can be part of the journey.
Speaking ahead of Euro 2025, midfielder Georgia Stanway opened up about the financial strain of supporting friends and family during what’s expected to be one of the most expensive tournaments yet - and how the Lionesses are stepping in to ease the pressure.
The tournament kicks off for England on July 5 against France in Zurich, with group matches against the Netherlands and Wales to follow.
But with Switzerland’s steep cost of living, even just getting there poses a major hurdle for travelling supporters.
“Even just for flights, hotels, the cost of living there is extremely high,” said Stanway. “So we understand the demand it is on fans.”
Lionesses step up to ease the burden
Determined not to let those financial challenges dampen their support system, England’s players have taken matters into their own hands - quite literally.
"A lot of us are putting our hands in our pockets to make sure that our families can get over there,” Stanway confirmed.
“We would love to see as many fans as possible and we want to thank them in advance because we know it's not cheap."
Each of the 23 Lionesses has received an equal, undisclosed sum to help cover travel and accommodation for their families - a figure said to match what the men’s team are given and in line with what the squad received for 2023 World Cup.
Players also receive a limited number of complimentary tickets.
Toone and Wubben-Moy echo the sentiment
Manchester United midfielder Ella Toone also addressed the cost barrier, noting: “I’ve heard it’s quite expensive. It’s one of the most expensive countries in the world.”
Still, Toone made it clear that she would do everything possible to help her family be part of the experience.
Arsenal defender Lotte Wubben-Moy praised fans willing to make the costly trip, calling their commitment “inspiring.”
Reflecting on the energy fans bring to the squad, she said: “It’s something that we see as our cliché of the 12th woman out there.”
