Farewell to a legend: Son Heung-min confirms Tottenham exit as club finalises LAFC transfer

Son Heung-min has officially announced he will leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer, bringing to a close an emotional 10-year run that saw him develop from promising signing to club captain and European winner.

Speaking at a press conference in Seoul before Spurs’ friendly against Newcastle United on Sunday, August 3, the 33-year-old described the decision as the most difficult of his career.

A decade of memories and milestones

Son leaves Tottenham as one of the club’s most iconic figures, finishing with 454 appearances and 173 goals - ranking him among the top four scorers in the club’s history - and 101 assists.

He famously lifted the Europa League last season, delivering Spurs’ first major trophy in 17 years.

He also won the Premier League Golden Boot in 2021/22 and earned the FIFA Puskas Award for his solo goal against Burnley.

Tears in Seoul

Sunday’s friendly, which was played in Seoul, doubled as his farewell match.

He walked off in tears after a guard of honour from both teams, visibly moved by the fans and players paying tribute.

“It was a perfect moment,” Son said. “They’ve gone so fast, the 10 years. Spurs will always be in my heart and the boys will always be in my history books.”

A record-breaking move awaits

Sources confirm Tottenham and Los Angeles FC have now reached an agreement on a transfer potentially surpassing £22.5m.

The deal is expected to break the MLS transfer record when made official in the coming days.

With Son’s departure confirmed and his next move all but finalised to LAFC, Spurs now begin life without a player who became not just a scorer but the club’s emotional core.
