FA Cup news: Aston Villa outclass Tottenham in North London to advance into the fourth round

Aston Villa secured an impressive 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup third round on Saturday, with Emiliano Buendía and Morgan Rogers getting the goals for Unai Emery’s men.

Here, Sports News Blitz writer Harrison Pearce examines how Villa progressed in London.

Energetic Villa go 2-0 up

Villa started the tie with purpose and energy, pressing Tottenham high and looking to seize control early.

Their intent was rewarded in the first half when Buendía opened the scoring.

The Argentine playmaker showed trademark composure, shifting the ball onto his favoured foot before smashing a precise effort beyond the Spurs goalkeeper.

Emery’s side continued to pose a threat on the break, and their persistence paid off at the end of the half.

Rogers proved the difference-maker this time, latching onto a loose ball in the penalty area and driving a powerful strike into the net to double Villa’s lead.

Spurs fall short despite consolation

In the second half, Tottenham threw men forward in search of getting back into the game.

Wilson Odobert eventually scored a consolation goal for Tottenham in the 54th minute after a low driven shot went straight past Marco Bizot.

However, even though Tottenham had got one goal back, Thomas Frank’s side could not do enough to find a much-needed equaliser.

Xavi Simons produced a shot from outside the box which made Bizot work hard to save the ball, but it was easily cleared away by the Villa defenders.

Strong organisation at the back combined with key interventions in the closing stages then ensured the visitors held firm until the final whistle.

The victory represents a significant FA Cup moment for Aston Villa, highlighted by the quality and impact of Buendía and Rogers.

For Tottenham, the defeat marked a disappointing exit from the competition.
