F1 news: Ralf Schumacher criticises Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari struggles
Lewis Hamilton’s switch to Ferrari has started on shaky ground, drawing criticism from within the paddock.
Here, Sports News Blitz’s Noah Ngcobo examines Ralf Schumacher’s blunt take on the seven-time champion’s early struggles in red.
A challenging start at Maranello
Lewis Hamilton’s long-awaited move to Ferrari has not gone according to plan.
Joining the Scuderia was meant to fulfil a lifelong dream and provide a chance at an eighth world championship.
Instead, Hamilton has struggled to adapt to his new environment, leaving fans and pundits questioning whether he can turn the season around.
The seven-time Formula 1 champion has had a rocky first half of the year, often overshadowed by team-mate Charles Leclerc.
Leclerc has already secured five podiums and earned the team’s first pole position of the season at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Hamilton, meanwhile, has faced disappointing results, including a 12th-place finish at the same event, a track where he has previously triumphed eight times.

Internal criticism and public frustration
Hamilton’s frustration has been clear both on and off the track.
Following his poor qualifying performance at the Hungaroring, he described himself as “useless” and suggested Ferrari should “change driver.”
In post-race interviews, he appeared tight-lipped, expressing little optimism about immediate improvements while indicating he would return for the Dutch Grand Prix.
Despite this, Hamilton has committed himself to helping Ferrari grow. He has submitted extensive analysis to the team, identifying areas for improvement and pushing for change within the organisation.
He has emphasised his belief in Ferrari’s potential, noting that the team’s passion and history make it capable of multiple World Championships.
Ralf Schumacher weighs in
Ralf Schumacher has been vocal in his assessment of Hamilton’s Ferrari tenure.
The former Formula 1 driver, who won six grands prix in his career, believes Hamilton’s approach has been counterproductive.
He suggested that Hamilton’s criticism of the team and struggles with the car are not helping anyone.
Schumacher also raised the possibility that at 40, Hamilton may be “too old to adapt” or perhaps simply “cannot cope” with the transition from Mercedes to Ferrari.
Schumacher emphasised that Ferrari’s focus remains firmly on Leclerc, describing the decision to prioritise the Monegasque driver as one made long ago.
He added that while Hamilton’s season has been disappointing, it is unlikely he will quit mid-year.

Head-to-head struggles with Leclerc
Hamilton’s on-track record this season underscores the gap between him and Leclerc.
Head-to-head results are striking, with Leclerc leading Hamilton in qualifying 10-4 and in races 11-2.
Leclerc’s consistent performances, coupled with Hamilton’s struggles, highlight the challenges the British driver faces in trying to assert himself within the team.
Looking ahead to 2026
With new chassis and engine regulations set to arrive in F1 2026, Hamilton may find an opportunity to reset his Ferrari campaign.
He sees the current challenges as part of a larger project, aiming to galvanise the team and create allies who share his ambition to win.
Hamilton’s focus remains unwavering. He has stated his sole goal during his Ferrari tenure is to win, acknowledging that his time at the team is limited.
The next season could be pivotal in determining whether Hamilton can finally achieve the championship success he has long chased while fulfilling his childhood dream of conquering Maranello.
