F1 news: Oscar Piastri wins dry-wet Belgian GP after lengthy delay

Oscar Piastri took his sixth win of the season at Spa-Francorchamps in yet another dry-wet Belgian Grand Prix, extending his lead in the Drivers’ championship standings to 16 points.

After an 80-minute delay, the grid finally got underway behind the Safety Car, all drivers starting on Intermediate tyres.

Early move gets the job done

Racing began on Lap 5 when the Safety Car pulled into the pits. Piastri wasted no time, immediately hunting down his team-mate Lando Norris and overtaking him on the Kemmel Straight.

From there, the Australian kept his composure throughout the 44-lap race - his maturity and skill on full display as he calmly led the pack.

Throughout the race, Piastri maintained a healthy gap between himself and Norris, eventually crossing the finish line 3.4 seconds ahead.

Battles behind

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completed the podium after battling with Saturday’s Sprint winner Max Verstappen in the early wet stages of the race.

Verstappen settled for P4, finishing just 1.4 seconds behind the Monegasque.

George Russell came home in fifth for Mercedes after a relatively quiet race, having passed Alex Albon early on. Albon crossed the finish line in P6, bagging a healthy haul of eight points for Williams.

Lewis Hamilton, who had struggled through qualifying and the Sprint, put in a champion’s drive on Sunday. The seven-time world champion started from the pit lane but climbed to P7 by the flag.

He was one of the first to switch from Intermediates to slicks - a perfectly timed call that paid off.

Liam Lawson, Gabriel Bortoleto and Pierre Gasly rounded off the top 10 with a DRS train behind them.
