F1 news: Martin Brundle on Max Verstappen quit rumours – “I’d hugely miss his talent”

Martin Brundle discussed Max Verstappen’s future on the latest edition of The F1 Show podcast, where speculation about the Dutchman potentially quitting Formula One was a hot topic.

Given rumours suggesting that Verstappen could leave F1 at the end of the season, and with the 28-year-old dipping his toes into other motorsports already, Brundle’s latest comments address his impact on the sport and the likelihood of him actually leaving.

Here, Sports News Blitz writer Luca Salmasi takes a closer look at Brundle’s thoughts on a possible Max Verstappen exit.

A rare talent

“I would hugely miss his talent,” the Sky Sports pundit admitted.

“His generational speed and car control is something that very few people in the history of motorsport have ever had.

“It’s quite extraordinary.”

Nothing lasts forever

Brundle added: “I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that, given they were building their own powertrain for the first time, his management would have put in an exit clause at the end of the year to see how it goes.

“Mercedes is saying, ‘No, there’s no place at this particular inn at the moment.’

“So, quite what would he do, I don’t know.

“Nobody’s indispensable in this business.”

Walking away isn’t simple

With Verstappen linked to other forms of motorsport and looking set to join the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in May, Brundle was asked whether he believed the Dutchman would really consider moving away from F1 and if it could be that straightforward.

“I’d be surprised if he’d really walk away from it. It’s great to be at the Nürburgring,” he said.

“I’ve done that in paddock – 150 cars on the track.

“He’ll find the 24-hour race quite challenging, quite sketchy.

“But he’s got his own team. He loves that. He loves sim racing.

“Do I think he’d just walk away from F1?

“No, I don’t, provided he can get a car that pleases him.”
