F1 news: Lewis Hamilton backed for Ferrari success as 2026 title race remains wide open

Former Formula One driver and analyst Martin Brundle has thrown his support behind Lewis Hamilton, insisting the seven time world champion still has what it takes to win races, and potentially fight for a title, with Ferrari.

Here, Sports News Blitz writer Noah Ngcobo takes a closer look at Hamilton’s resurgence at Ferrari, the impact of the new regulations, and what to expect as the 2026 Formula One season heads into the Miami Grand Prix.

Brundle confident in Hamilton resurgence

After a challenging first season with the Italian team in 2025, Hamilton has shown clear signs of improvement in 2026. Ferrari have climbed back into contention, currently sitting second in the Constructors’ Championship, while Hamilton and teammate Charles Leclerc occupy fourth and third in the Drivers’ standings.

Brundle believes the shift in regulations has played a major role in this turnaround. The current generation of cars appears to better suit Hamilton’s driving style, allowing him to feel more comfortable and confident behind the wheel.

A stronger Ferrari and a more settled Hamilton

Hamilton’s move to Ferrari was one of the biggest stories in recent Formula One history, but his debut campaign did not go to plan. He struggled to adapt and failed to reach the podium across the season, while Ferrari dropped down the order in the Constructors’ standings.

This year, however, the picture looks very different. Ferrari have made a step forward in performance, and Hamilton has already secured a podium finish early in the season. Just as importantly, he has closed the gap to Leclerc, who held a clear advantage within the team the previous year.

Brundle has pointed to Hamilton’s improved mood and approach as further signs of progress. With a more competitive car underneath him, the Brit appears far more at ease, something that could prove crucial as the season develops.

Miami set to reshape the championship battle

The upcoming Miami Grand Prix could prove to be a defining moment in the campaign. After a five week break, teams have had valuable time to refine their understanding of the new regulations and introduce upgrades.

Brundle expects Ferrari to be among the teams making significant gains, suggesting that the race in Miami could feel like a fresh start to the season. With a Sprint format also in play, there will be even more points available, adding further unpredictability to the championship fight.

So far, Mercedes have set the early pace, winning the opening races of the year. Rookie sensation Kimi Antonelli leads the Drivers’ Championship, narrowly ahead of teammate George Russell.

Despite this, the gap between teams remains small, and momentum could shift quickly as upgrades take effect.

Internal battle key to Ferrari ambitions

While Ferrari’s overall improvement has been encouraging, Brundle has stressed that Hamilton’s biggest challenge may come from within his own team.

To truly contend for a title, Hamilton will need to consistently outperform Leclerc, who remains one of the strongest drivers on the grid. The competition between the two could ultimately define Ferrari’s season.

At the same time, Brundle believes Hamilton still possesses the instinct and racecraft required to seize opportunities. If Ferrari can provide a car capable of fighting at the front, even occasional chances could be enough for the veteran driver to convert into victories.

A season full of uncertainty and opportunity

With 19 races still to come, the 2026 season remains highly unpredictable. The new regulations have created a landscape where performance gains are still being unlocked, meaning the competitive order is far from fixed.

Brundle expects teams to trade positions as the year progresses, with development playing a decisive role. In his view, multiple teams remain in contention, and any driver from the leading outfits could realistically challenge for the title.

Ferrari’s resurgence has placed them firmly back in the conversation, and Hamilton’s upward trajectory adds another layer of intrigue. With the championship still taking shape, the battle at the front is set to remain intense, with no clear favourite as the season continues.
