Ryder Cup format

Being a team competition, the Ryder Cup is set up slightly differently from your usual PGA Tour event.

At its simplest, it is a three-day matchplay competition; however, there are several different formats that take place throughout.

Across the first two days, players compete in pairs in foursome and four-ball style matches, then on Sunday, 12 singles matches take place to round off the tournament.

In foursomes, team-mates take turns hitting the same ball, with the lowest score on the hole winning. If both sides finish with the same score, the hole is halved.

In four-balls, each player plays their own ball, and the team with the lowest individual score on the hole wins. If the best scores are tied, the hole is halved.

The same rules apply in the 12 singles matches - lowest score wins the hole, and a tie results in the hole being halved.

Across the tournament, a total of 28 games will take place, with each being worth a point, and a draw worth half. The first team to 14 points wins the tournament, and if the tournament ends in a draw, the reigning champions keep the trophy.

Who has won the most Ryder Cups?

The US team has come out on top 27 times, compared to Europe’s 15 wins, while just two tournaments have finished even.
