England player ratings vs Croatia: Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham lead the way as Three Lions make winning World Cup 2026 start

England began their World Cup 2026 campaign with an entertaining 4-2 victory over Croatia, but Thomas Tuchel's side left Texas with both reasons for optimism and plenty to think about defensively after a chaotic Group L opener.

Captain Harry Kane led from the front with two goals and an all-round display that underlined his importance to the Three Lions.

The striker opened the scoring from the penalty spot after seeing his initial effort saved, only for the kick to be retaken because Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic moved off his line too early.

However, England's lead lasted only a few minutes as Croatia twice fought back in a lively first half.

Martin Baturina and Petar Musa both found the net for Zlatko Dalic's side, exposing weaknesses in England's defence and ensuring the teams went into the break level at 2-2.

Bellingham inspires second-half response

England looked a different side after the restart.

Just two minutes into the second half, Jude Bellingham produced a moment of quality to restore England's advantage.

The Real Madrid midfielder drove forward before finishing confidently to make it 3-2 and swing the momentum firmly in England's favour.

Kane remained influential throughout, not only with his goals but also with his link-up play and leadership.

The Bayern Munich forward was heavily involved in England's attacking moves and was later named Player of the Match after another standout performance on the international stage.

Noni Madueke also impressed after being handed a starting role. The winger caused Croatia problems throughout the contest and played a key role in England's attacking threat, justifying Tuchel's decision to start him on the right flank.

Defensive concerns remain for Tuchel

Despite the victory, England's defensive display is likely to concern Tuchel ahead of the tougher challenges that lie ahead.

Croatia repeatedly found space and looked dangerous whenever they attacked during the first half, with England's back line struggling to deal with quick transitions and movement around the penalty area.

Questions have already been raised about whether the German coach could make changes in defence for the next group game against Ghana on Tuesday, June 23.

Marcus Rashford eventually wrapped up the victory with England's fourth goal late in the game, ensuring the Three Lions started their World Cup journey with three points.

Yet while the attacking display offered plenty of encouragement, Tuchel will know that improvements at the back may be needed if England are to challenge for the trophy.
