EFL Championship news: Southampton expelled from Championship play-off final after multiple breaches

Following a review by an Independent Disciplinary Commission, the EFL have announced that Southampton have been expelled from the Championship play-offs after admitting to multiple rule breaches regarding observation of opposition training.

As a result, the final will now be played between Hull City and Middlesbrough.

On Tuesday, May 19, the EFL published an official declaration stating that the club will also receive a four-point deduction heading into the 2026/27 season.

This comes after Southampton faced allegations concerning surveillance that occurred over a Middlesbrough training session ahead of the first leg against the Saints in the play-offs.

A statement published by the EFL said:

“An Independent Disciplinary Commission has today expelled Southampton from the Sky Bet Championship Play-Offs after the club admitted to multiple breaches of EFL Regulations related to the unauthorised filming of other Clubs’ training.”

More breaches uncovered

Southampton admitted to observation of training sessions within 72 hours of matches earlier this season against Oxford United and Ipswich Town, in addition to the incident involving Middlesbrough.

The investigation reportedly uncovered a pattern of conduct rather than an isolated incident, which appears to have influenced the severity of the punishment handed down by the commission.

The decision has sent shockwaves through English football, particularly because of the timing.

Southampton had already booked their place in the play-off final and were preparing for one of the biggest games of their season before the ruling dramatically changed the picture.

The outcome has also sparked widespread debate among supporters across the country, with the Saints and supporters ‘shocked’ by the punishment.

The ruling is one of the most severe punishments handed out in recent Championship history and highlights the EFL’s stance on maintaining competitive integrity.

Middlesbrough back in contention

Middlesbrough have continued training and are now officially reinstated into the play-offs, with the final date still scheduled for Saturday, May 23.

Hull City now face a different challenge heading into the final, with preparations likely having been focused on a Southampton side they will no longer meet.

Southampton have appealed, with that hearing set to be heard on Wednesday, May 20.
